There are some great games on PSP for sure, but damn they are few and far between. It seems like sometimes 9 months go by without a PSP game I want, and even then its usually a $65 import. Just look at the PSP section at a store like Target. There isn't JACK SHIT there. Maybe 2 dozen games and most are crappy "little brother" versions of major console releases (Syphon Filter, Need for Speed, Metal Gear, whatever) or licensed garbage. The new PSP ads seem to have changed from "we have the most powerful handheld out there" to "When you buy Greatest Hits games we are way cheaper than an iPod Touch" which is a pretty sad state to be in. Nobody making a real game machine should have to stoop to defending themselves against a friggn iPod.
I couldn't get by without the DS. I do most of my modern gaming on it. This past week we had a new Layton game and The Last Window (in EU anyway) and then its Super Robot Wars L later this month. I can't just play mediocre Falcom ports and Bandai stuff forever.
As for the PSP2...I don't know man. Sony is floundering pretty hard core with the PSPGo flopping big time, Turismo Portable being lame as hell, and the PS3 being barely better than nothing. If they can get their shit together and put something out with some character and some...spirit...not sure what I'm going for, then I'm all for it since I love handhelds and I love competition but its pretty obvious that these people are absolutely lost and have no idea what the f*ck they are doing anymore. Considering how expensive and over-engineered the original PSP was, its amazing it survived as well as it did. I don't think they could do something like that again. The market just isn't there anymore.
For me, it took a few years, but the PSP has overcome the DS in games that I love. I used to love the DS over the PSP, there were lot's of great games in comparison, but I've REALLY been enjoying the last year or 2, & now that we're getting all these Falcom games, the deal is sealed for me! And I think Sony honestly has done much better then previous portables pitted against Nintendo. Plus, in Japan the PSP & PS3 have both picked up steam to where they're the best sellers each week or month or whatever even over the Wii & DS, which can invigorate 3rd parties to make more great games for both systems.
As for the PS3, for me, it's the best console of this generation. The Wii for me is 2nd, it has some cool games, though the motion stuff puts me back a bit, I mainly just don't like having more then one controller, but I put up with it in some games. And the 360, I only have one for a couple of games. I don't care about the Halo's or GoW's, they just don't do anything for me personally. I think the Halo's are good, but overated.
I'm also a person who absolutly does not care about online gaming, it doesn't interest me. A friend of mine tried to get me to play online with him in War for Cybertron, but, I just can't get excited about waiting for him to be online, & then having to be there & not pause the game even if I need to get up to do something. Though I know I'm in the minority for that.
I have a feeling the PSP2 will be very comfortable handle. Still, gotta wait for real news on it. The 3DS doesn't have anything interesting for me on launch so, that's a relief for me wallet to be sure!
