Your Favorite Mega Drive Imports (here we go again!)
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:05:08 AM »
Once again it's Mathius' infamous series of threads wanting to know what your favorite imports are! This time it's for the Mega Drive. :dance: Thanks to our new member "batre" I have a modded Genesis that will let me play imports. Thing is I don't know a lot about Japan only Mega Drive games. Aside from the well knowns like Twinkle Tale and Greylancer. What are some of your favs, and why?

Edit: Joe, your the resident Sega guru and I hope you chime in. :)

well, I'd definitely say to get wonder boy IV, or at least i think that's it, I'm perpetually confused by the numbering in that series.
anyway, it's typical wonder boy stuff, though i think it's the best one.
also, fyi, most PAL games that do a check only do it at startup, so you can just flip the switch at the main menu or something.

A few of those are available in the US. Are there differences that make them stand out from their American counterparts?

No difference at all. Infact now that you have a region switch you get the title screen of the region usually on those titles. Were you looking for exclusive MD games? Only ones off the top of my head are Monster World IV, Pulseman, and Alien Soldier

Yeah, exclusives. Alien Soldier!! I can't wait to pick that one up sometime when I can afford it.

Alien Soldier and Rockman Mega World are my 2 picks.

Rockman Mega World is Mega Man 1-3 with the Super Mario All-Stars treatment.

Yeah, I have heard about Mega World but I have never seen it.

Hmmm the genny/md was no where near shafted as the tg16 when it came to bring out imports.  I'm having a hard time thinking about strict imports that pop up in my mind...

The only one that I can recall is Vixen 357 - a best way to describe this one is a mech-themed Langrisser (by the same developers, too).  And continuing on that Langrisser II for the MD.  (Though I only played the PS1 port).

If you're into uncensored versions of US titles, some ones that you might consider are:
* Hokuto no Ken (Last Battle)
* Kujakuoh 2 (Mystic Defender)
* Bare Knuckle II & III (SoR 2 & 3)

What Termis said +Verytex.

If you like platform style games Pulseman is also a good one.  Also, so is Magical Troll Ruuto-kun.  Twinkle Tail is another great game that plays like Valkyrie no Densetsu.

Hey Tats! Where ya been? :)

Thanks for the list! But, most of those titles can be found here in the US. I am mainly focusing on Mega Drive exclusives (Japanese and Europe).

Actually it is called Monster World IV and it doesn't have a lick of English in the game.  There is one part where you need to answer questions correctly YES or NO and the questions are in Japanese.  I made a guide with the correct answers, though.  There is also a quick scene towards the end with some scaling that trounces the PC Engine because it is the Mega Drive and FOR NO OTHER REASON!  The same exact effect would be far worse on the PC Engine since it is an 8-bit console built by primitive people.  At least that's what the Sega fanboy insists!  :)
