introducing.......the PS2 TV
« on: December 03, 2010, 02:56:55 AM »
Saw this today, pretty cool although I hope it allows people to play non widescreen games in non stretched mode. For the price this is a pretty good deal. Wish we will have one in the U.S.

Interesting, though the PS2 is rather long in the tooth and only 22" (that's what she said).  Seems kinda cheap too; that's about $300, which is about the same as what Sony charges for a 22" interweb capable LCD.

Very cool! However, Sony seems to be a little late to the punch. Maybe 4-5 years ago?

I like it.  Is it going to come out in the US?

This could be the HDTV missing from my game room, which currently is SDTV only.

Its a medium/small Sony TV...you can get those anywhere, with a PS2 attached...those are worth about $50 now. I really don't see why anyone would covet such a thing, especially since its a Sony. I'm completely fed up with their proprietary cables, pointless firewalls, shitty software and poor reliability. This product in particular probably wouldn't be so terrible, but I'm off Sony in principle for the next 5 years or so. If they can either get back to a) being a less terrible company (say, pre 1998) or b) being a company that makes products that are worth putting up with (like Apple) then I'll come back.

Although I am a Sony purchaser, I was digging your post for the first few lines, as I have had some gripes with the company for a little while.  However, you then turned into the worst sheep in the world of consumerism with your Apple comment.  I expected better from you Zeta!

Apple uses the Dock Connector on their iPod/iPhone...the same one they've been using since they ditched the normal Firewire that was only on the very first iPods. Given the ubiquity of iPods that makes the Dock connector to USB cable one of the most common cables in the world.

Regardless, my point wasn't that Apple doesn't do this shit, but rather that when they do its worth putting up with. Sony on the other hand isn't balancing the equation very well. They have even more annoyances, and a very small percentage of the "worth it" aspect.

If you've ever owned a series of phones or Walkmans from Sony over the years you'd know that Sony changed the power supply with every MD player or CD Walkman they made. Every f*cking time. They switch the polarity or the plug size or something, every time. My girlfriend had a Discman, a really premium late-90s one, that actually had a proprietary headphone jack. They don't even put standard mini-USB on their cameras. I have a nice Sony camera, but I have to find the special cable for it, which of course costs $50 from Sony if I lose it.

A perfect example: the PSP Go. If you have a big collection of old PSP stuff there is NOTHING you can take with you to the PSPGo. The power supply is different, the USB cable is propriety, even the Memory Stick is different, and of course your UMD collection is worthless on the thing.

Then there is shit like this:

And the rootkit fiasco, them shipping thousands of PS2 that were broken right out of the box in 2003...they just suck now. I used to love their stuff, but those days are gone. They aren't worth putting up with.

Proprietary headphone jack?!?  That's f*cking ridiculous.

Yeah, it was the same diameter as normal, but it was much shorter. I think it might have been coaxial in design. Anyway, when the headphones crap out (of if you just don't like Sony headphones) you have to locate one of the extremely difficult to find adaptors.

I guess the theory was that since the plug was shorter that would free up more space to make the unit smaller. Of course, their amazing MD unite from the same era never needed such a thing, and those f*ckers were ultra compact.

bandai did the same thing with the wonderswan (but to be fair, the port was also used for other things.)

for those thinking of importing such a thing, keep in mind that Japanese HDTV is in a different format than America's.
