Here are described two of my most beloved sound effects/noises in video games, which make the actual already perfect game even perfecter. So to speak, the dot over an i, the final touch to absolut perfection.

Gate of Thunder:
The explosion noise when ever a boss says good bye and turns into ash'n'stuff. This powerful "Boom-Tschhhh-Boom-Tschhhh-Boom-Tschhhh - Stage Clear!"- noise upvalues the game imo trememdous, and makes me so happy everytime from new when ever I play it. I think they thieved it a bit from BttF, when the Delorean switches onto an other time.
Nevertheless, one of the greatest noise in history of video games and beyond of that.

Last Resort: Before the game starts, your ship is flying over the streets of Skyscraper-City and takes off into the dark sky, this accompanied with a powerful whizz-noise. This noise gives me the goosebumps when ever I start the game, no matter how many times I've played it.

Some background -> It was Summer 1992, when I went to Italy for some nice beachy summer vacation with my family. After arriving at the beach and having a first jump into the sea, I was heading up to the street for locating some arcades. The first one found, quickly dashed in for some plays. While checking out the cabs, what did my eyes suddenly have to see? LAST RESORT!!!
So I sat down on the chair and dropped in a coin. Right after that I just experienced the probably hugest goosebumps in my life from any videogames. Still a little bit wet  from the sea water (back and bathers), sitting on the chair in that aircooled arcade and gotten blast away from those spheric title noises followed by that whizz-noise when my ship's takin off, I so have never experienced before. A personal great moment in my own history of video games.

What are your favorite noises in video games?

Ghosts 'n Goblins (arcade): I can remember as a kid having a birthday party in a pizza restaurant. In the basement, they had a few arcade games set up, a Sega Master System and an NES. This was probably 1986. I had a few rounds on Ghosts 'n Goblins, some Hang-On and Safari Hunt on the SMS and Super Mario Bros. on the NES. This was also the first time I can recall playing Super Mario Bros. It made me want an NES (I had already been wishing for a Master System).

Metroid: This was the very first video game I bought with my own money. I was given an NES with Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt as a gift, and chose Metroid as my first purchase. What a good choice! The theme to Mini-Boss hideout I (Kraid's domain) is forever running through my head (this is not enough...).

Golden Axe (arcade): I remember playing this game at a Mexican restaurant for a friend's birthday party in the late 1980s. We are still good friends to this day and enjoy playing retro games together sometimes (mostly NES; Mega Man 2, Castlevania, etc.). Anyway, the theme to Golden Axe has forever been stuck in my head since then. This was also the very first arcade game I beat! I didn't count how many quarters it took... but it was many. Death Adder took a lot of money.

Saint Dragon and R-Type (arcade): I can recall playing these in a bowling alley (more birthdays!) in 1989/1990. They always seemed to have a few shooters, so maybe that's why I like that sort of game and now appreciate the PC Engine so much. Despite the loudness of the shooting effects in Saint Dragon, I really liked the background music of level 1 for some reason. The R-Type level 1 theme is also permanently in my head thanks to playing it instead of bowling.

Hope someone found that interesting!

I really like the *sound effect* in Solider Blade I thought it was a lot better and more dynamic than it needed to be for a shooter!

Oh, noises (sound effects)...

Well, I guess it is this:

The strange little glitch sound effects that happen in Lunar: The Silver Star (Sega CD/Mega CD) when you use magic in a dungeon. Probably Dragonmaster Dan knows what I am talking about. Perhaps you use a heal spell while walking around on a dungeon map. Sometimes it sounds like little magical bits of energy are bouncing around and ricocheting off walls and such. This is especially noticeable at the end of the game when you are climbing the final staircase to the goddess. I've always thought it was a neat sound, even though it is probably a glitch.

By the way, Lunar: The Silver Star is a perfect game.

Perhaps it's not quite a 'perfect' game, but I really like the farty sound made when you zoom onto the screen at the start of each level in Forgotten Worlds and the similarly farty explosions when you destroy an enemy soldier.

Most of the truly "perfect" sound effects come from the era of 8-bit arcade machines. Pac Man, Flogger, Donkey Kong, Tron, Galaga, and possibly the best of all, Robotron. Robotron is otherworldly.

Its not something you can get in an emulator either. You have to have the original PCB, the original amp, the original full range speaker, and the rotting MDF cabinet with the squirrel bones in the bottom. Like a vintage guitar amp, all these things are part of the picture.

I do think the sound is pretty great in Gate of Thunder too.

I do agree that the 8-bit arcades have awesome sounds. I really like Robotron also (a friend of my brother had a stand up unit), and the original arcade Mario Bros. theme was very memorable. There is just so many that I love that it's hard to pick just one. I guess one of my favs would be the sound of the blue doors opening and closing in Metroid. Also, when Harry picks up silver or gold in Pitfall for the 2600 is permanently burnt into my gray matter.

Fatal Fury 1 - Neo Geo Although, not a perfect game.... I love it. The sound effects and music is phenomenal. Just listen to the voice effects when doing special moves (Joe: Hurrrrrricane Upperrrrr!), Joe's rapid punch, hit effects and the jams. This was the most impressive game sound wise around its time for me. I also liked having an alternative to SF2 and personally thought it played pretty good even with the controls. You just had to pace yourself with the motions and timing attacks. It isn't a frantic fighter, but more strategy based.

I will edit this or add a post when I think of some more. Gotta eat.

This, pretty much.

Out of them all, the most recognizable sound for me that represents not only arcades, but video games as whole, would be the noises coming from Galaga -- in particular, the "piyu, piyu" shooting sound.  (Galaga seemed to be much bigger in Korea where I was first exposed to arcades, rather than in the U.S.)

GunHed (Blazing Lazers) -- Upon shooting the COSMIC BRAINS in Area 4, players are treated to sub-bass gutturals (a fantastically pleasing sound), before the brains exploded.

Oh, and the extremely satisfying explosions that occur when said COSMIC BRAINS explode are really nice, too.

Makyō Densetsu (Legendary Axe) -- Maxxxxxxed out (fully powered-up) AXE smashing into any challenging opponent = immensely satisfying experience. Literally earth-shattering.
