Is there a known replacement cog for the original CD ROM?

I read that the cogs get brittle and crumble, but that there was no direct replacement - is this still the case?
Does anyone know the dimensions of ths cog?

I also had the idea of MacGuyvering something witha foam disc or an elastic band
