It's an action puzzle game, actually.  Similar to Cybernoid.

yeah.  its still a bit different.  because of the swimming aspect. 

Too bad they didnt make more Ecco like games .

Kind also reminds me of Solar Jetman for NES

The Haunting isn't really a platformer either.

It's an isometric viewpoint.

Swimming/Castleroids/Action/Adventure?

Would Ecco be in the same class as a E.V.O (SNES) or NiGHTS on Saturn?

Nights and Ecco actually have lots in common.
