I miss being able to just play games without having to constantly fix them and keep a box of spare parts in the closet.

Today - found a cleaning kit that fits a hucard slot and got my old Miria converter to work for the first time in three years.

Yesterday - took a rare chance with a CD-R and jammed my Duo lens.  Took it apart, fixed it, and spent an hour getting the little plastic tray to sit right without rubbing on discs.

Last week - replaced N64 control stick, replaced battery in Super Mario Kart.

Last month - noticed that the "start" buttons on three different SNES  controllers didn't work.  Took 'em apart, cleaned 'em.

Within the last month or so I:

Disassembled and cleaned both my Turbo Stick and NES Advantage.  It's amazing how much better they work now.

Also disassembled the NES and bent in the pins in on the 72-pin connector to get a little more life out of it.

And cleaned the contacts on my NES and SNES games.

Sometimes I feel like I spend as much time maintaining the games as I do playing them  But is sure is nice to be able to pop a game in and have it work without having to fiddle with it a bunch.

I guess some of your trouble would be alleviated if you a) avoided converters, b) avoided CDRs, and c) avoided the N64 all together.

Luckily the SNES thing was an easy fix.

Hmmm...you might be on to something there.

I like the Miria converter though.  Now that it's clean it loads up on the first try every time and, unlike a region mod, I can play imports on multiple systems.

Forgot one:
Two weeks ago - ordered a brand-new Fighting Sword 6-button controller for 3DO (another one of Zeta's favorite systems  ).  It arrived and didn't even fit in the console until I shaved some plastic off the controller plug.  Tried it out and right away one button didn't work and one turbo switch didn't work.  I fixed it, but it's still a shitty controller and not even worth using.  I bought it because it looked like the PCE Hori Fighting Commander

Yeah, I enjoy it as well...  I guess it's part of the "charm" of keeping up with a hobby that's 20+ years old.

It's fun, but I'm tired of having a backlog of stuff I need to fix.  Currently awaiting repair:  TGCD, 2 TurboExpress units, another N64 controller, another 3DO controller, 2 Genesis controllers, AC adapter for SMS II, and my Power Base Converter.

Sega Saturn Virtua Fighters arcade stick, had it for a while now, plugged the beast in and the saturn doesn't respond to it.

Maybe I'll pop it open and see if I can figure out whats what.
