I'll be going. Actually, my website is sponsoring the event. We're going to do a live podcast from the show, including a gameshow-style contest with a bunch of prizes.
It seems like a rather small event, but we thought we'd give it a shot and see how it goes.

Just to revive this topic, I would like to say that there is a good chance I am going to the Midwest Gaming Classic this year, which starts on June 2nd I think. If anyone else is planning on going, please post and we can try to meet up! I'll more than likely be in a group of four (two of my bros and my cousin). I talk to one of the guys who runs these conventions online and from the sound of it, this year's show is going to be huge! Just to list some of the people and sponsors coming:
Sega JagFest Ralph Baer (!) Atlus Digital Press (I think)
Check out this link (http://www.mobygames.com/featured_article/feature,21/) for a video of the 2004 convention. According to the guy I talk to, it's going to be a lot bigger than 2004's due to the new location! It definitely looks exciting, so anyone else interested, post up :) .

Hey Guys,
Make sure you stop by the Team Fremont booth (we'll be the first one you see as you walk in) and play some Turbografx with me. I'm going to have one set up with a pile of games, along with an Atari and an NES.
Also, we're doing a live episode from the show on Saturday with a game show/trivia contest. You can win a bunch of classic gaming stuff, etc.
And finally, a bunch of our listeners are getting together Saturday night, going out to a local bar/restaurant, and hanging out. You're all welcome to come. Just stop by and say hi. (My name's John, BTW;)).
We also did an interview w/one of the organizers on last week's show. Just hit this link and listen to the 5/21 episode: http://www.teamfremont.com/teamfremontlive.shtml
Can't wait to meet you guys!
John

Awesome guys, glad to see you are going (though I already knew jleud was going since I was aware of Team Fremont being there). I'll definitely try finding and playing some good old Turbo games with you, jleud; that would rock. Should I bring any Turbo goods or video game goods in general?

That's up to you. I'm going to have about a dozen or so Turbo games to play at the booth, along with the other consoles.
We're working on the game show right now, and the prizes will be many. It looks like it's going to be played by two teams of two and it'll be Saturday afternoon. We're doing it in cooperation with diehardgamer.com. Should be a good time.
Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Nice.
I'll actually just have a Turbografx set up at the booth since I don't really want to take a bunch of CD games and a pricey Duo. But I'll have a Tap and probably Dungeon Explorer and some other multiplayer titles.
Oh, and I won't be there until Saturday morning.

My Duo stopped recognizing CD's so thats not going to work either.
I could just bring my PC with Magic Engine on it. I also have 5 PC gamepads. Then we could play DE 2.
Just an Idea.

Crap, I didn't realize that it was this weekend. I'll try to go, but I doubt that I'll be able to make it. I attended a couple of years ago and had a really good time.

Hey jleud, I'm going to talk to this guy who helps run it and ask if it's cool if I bring in one of my systems and see if I can hook it up with other people displays (like yours, if that's ok with you). I have a perfectly working Turbo Duo and PCE+CDROM2 and a handful of five player games and five controllers. I'd be more than willing to bring it all so I can play these games with other Turbo fans out there :) . I'm also going to bring my Express.

Post by: KingDrool on May 31, 2006, 03:19:33 PM
No problem, man. That'd be fine with me. The more people I can get playing the Turbo Duo the better. Just stop by the booth and we'll get you hooked up.
We're just going to need it all cleared out from 5-7 on Saturday. That's when we're having the big game show/trivia contest.

That sounds good. I asked one of the guys running the MGC about it and he said it's cool to do as long as the person with the display is good with it. I have the following five player games:
Battle Royale (my favorite :D ) Bomberman (via the Gate of Thunder CD) Bomberman '94 Dungeon Explorer Moto Roader

Well I'm glad there are several of us going now. :) I'm still not sure what to expect, I'm hoping it's a fun event overall. We'll find out!
I'll be there on Sunday, but not on Saturday. We're aiming to get there right around 10 am when it opens. I hope to run into you guys and say hello. If anybody wants to keep their eyes peeled, I think I'll be wearing my own "Heavy Sixer" t-shirt from my online shop  In fact, I wish I had started designing gamer t-shirts sooner, I would have gotten a booth at the show! Maybe next year!

I got back from the MGC about an hour ago and man it was great stuff! I was expecting a lot from it and it was more than expected, how awesome is that?
The place was huge. It was like two main big rooms and each room had devided sections. The main room had a free play arcade and pinball section which was loaded with lots of good stuff (pinball was outstanding), the center had Team Freamont (who were outstanding at the show) along with a small shop/vender displaying arcade and pinball parts and what not, and the rest was various video game shops which were loaded with great games to sell. Lots and lots of games and a lot of good deals. The best part was that with just about every store, you could bargain with them and get your games for very reasonable prices. Real life shopping rulez online shopping any day.
The other room, the event hall, had a small Dreamcast convention right when you walked in (DreamCon), a small Mac and classic computer playable section, a display of a few consoles, and a small Jaguar convention (JagFest), which had a VERY NICE Lynx table might I add, all in the same room.
There were two other rooms located in the event room. One of them was a exhibit displaying lots of awesome consoles such as Turbo Duo (which I will discuss later), Neo Geo supergun, Vectrex, etc... and had tons of great games to display on the consoles. This room also contained a table which consisted of a cool guy putting together a PC inside a NES case all day which was auctioned off by Team Freamont later and a display of various classic computer systems with boxes and such and a very neat classic Atari display for stores and what not.
The other room inside the event hall was the speaker room, which featured various speakers throughout the days give a nice presentation, my favorite being Mark Goldberg (or was his name Marty?) discussing video game origins (did you know the first network game was actually played in 1961??), some video game misconeptions with Oddyssey and Atari, and Ralph Baer. Ralph Baer was originally going to come to the MGC, but couldn't make it due to his health conditions, poor man. Bless Ralph Baer.
Team Freamont had a excellent contest on Saturday which had two teams of two vs each other in video game trivia and video game competition, like Double Dare. As far as I know, a whole lot of people didn't sign up, so my group of four (me, two bros, and my cousin) all signed up and my oldest bro and cousin were entered in the contest! Unfortunately, they got beat pretty bad by the other team because they other team had some insane little kid that knew some crazy stuff about games, plus my bro and cus got a few really hard questions. Pretty much everyone assosciated with the contest got a free prize, so the contest players, audience helpers, and random audience members who didn't receive anything. Thanks a lot for the N64 controller keychain, jleud! :)
As far as Turbo-related stuff weren't, there wasn't a whole lot, but I'll discuss everything Turbo-related. First off, when you walked into the main hall, you immediately see Team Freamont and their Turbo Duo display which had Bonk in it, so that was a very nice treat. For Saturday, I brought in my Duo Tap and five controllers with some various games to hook up to Team Freamont's Duo for fun, but unfortunately my group and the Team were the main people who put the most love into the Duo set up :( .
About three or four stores had Turbo games for sale but the problem is that most vendors only have games like World Class Baseball and TV Sports Basketball, this also goes for another store I visit in the real world and a lot of online stores. The vendors here did feature some other Turbo games for sale, some I can think of were Gunboat, Victory Run, World Court Tennis, TV Sports Football, Ordyne, and Bonk's Adventure. A person I talk to online told me he had bought It Came From the Desert from one of the stores, so I had a fun time telling him that game rules :D .
The game display room in the event hall had a Turbo Duo set up and some games with. The main two games the guy displayed on it were Devil's Crush and Dracula X, I don't recall seeing any other games displayed even though I saw a small stack of other Turbo games by the system (we couldn't change the game ourselves). Both games got good attention, especially Devil's Crush, which made my day. Also next to the Turbo Duo was a Super Grafx with the case of Aldynes and Battle Ace displayed next to it and next to that was a PC-FX, with the cases of Battle Heat and that women wrestling game. I believe that was all the Turbo-related things I saw there.
As far as people from here that I met on the show, I got to meet jleud and TJ, both people are awesome! Once again, nice to meet both of you! The only two other members from these boards that were/thought about going to the show were turbo_sage and torgo, who I didn't get to meet with, though I thought I might've seen or talked to them and just didn't know who they were. turbo_sage was selling me on AIM that he might not be able to go, so that would explain for him. torgo, by any chance were you the guy who seemed to be incharge of that room in the event hall with all the systems including the Duo with Dracula X?
That sums it all up and I had one hell of a time going to it. I highly recommend anyone else in the Midwest consider going to it next year, it's lots and lots of fun! I took a ton of pictures and I plan on editing and uploading them to an article I'll make for my website soon. I'll remind everyone on this thread when I have done so.

No, the tall guy in that room is the one that owns ALL of those systems. He was actually the first one to see Fantasy Star Soldier when I pulled it out of the "archives" back in '03/'04, so I gave him a copy after I saw how dedicated he is to the "craft." I was only there on Saturday for a few hours. I got to drop by the Team Fremont booth and show 'em my EEPROM's etc. But a moajority of my time was playing Tempest 2k with the rotary controller, which I ended-up buying :D I haven't played that game in 3 years, and I got past level 70, so I still got it!!!!
I kept pret lowkey for most of the time that I was there. My buddy and I got to tell a couple of impromptu stories, as he went to a couple of the CES' with me back in the day.
It was definitely much bigger than the show that I attended a couple of years ago at the school. I had a blast playing pinball and Red Baron (I used to OWN at that game!!) I had a great time, especially as all of the memories came FLOODING back in.

Hm, Keranu pretty much summed up the majority of the event, description-wise! Good to meet you dude, nice to put a face to the name and all that. You looked to be having a good time today, as did I.
A few more things about the show...
Actually, there was pretty much an entire ROW of pinball parts. I was kinda wishing I had some pins to fix cuz it looked like there was a ton of stuff available from a few different vendors. Pinball was very well represented in the arcade area, but I thought the videogame selection was a bit lacking in the classics department. There was a Donkey Kong (with a card on it from the guy who apparently does restorations, and while the monitor was obviously newly re-capped, the marquee and CPO were clearly home-printed garbage) (oh, and early in the afternoon, I scored 85,300 on the DK machine, and I didn't see anyone top it all day), Xevious, Red Baron, a Star Wars that kept resetting when you tried to play it, lots of multi-game machines that I assumed were running on PCs, and lots more recent games like Virtua Fighter, Tekken Tag, etc. I would have liked to see more classic vids available to play.
The vendors were great -- tons of stuff to shop for, from Atari to Xbox. Not a whole lot of Turbo stuff, but there was some. There was a vendor or two that did have games for more obscure classic systems like the Emerson Arcadia, but it was largely Atari, Intellivision, and Nintendo systems. Plenty of rare (and expensive) 2600 games. Also lots of swag available -- there was that place from Minnesota right up front (Warpzone Games or something like that?) that had tons of cool Japanese trinkets, like the dot-pin straps, mini dioramas, Kubricks, and all that. They also had some import hardware for sale that I really wish I could've afforded -- TWO boxed Famicom 3D glasses, a Famicom Disk System (I have one, but it doesn't work), the Famicom keyboard, some Neo Geo stuff, Super Famicom stuff, and more. Right behind them was Video Game Collector magazine, and they had a bunch of ORIGINAL Dragon's Lair animation cels for sale, with backgrounds! They were each $299 or $399 -- I almost wet myself looking at those.
Messiah was there with their Generation NEX console. It's a nice enough little unit, but what I was more impressed with was their wireless NES and SNES controllers. I tried both and they're very sensitive and responsive, good quality, worked great. Didn't buy any though.
AtariAge and Packrat Video both had nice large booths where you could sample a ton of homebrew 2600 games, as well as a few for 5200, Colecovision, and Odyssey. I had a lot of fun with Strat-O-Gems Deluxe on the 2600, especially with the AtariVox thing. I might order that one sometime.
The "museum" room was cool cuz I got to play some great stuff that I just never had the chance to try, like Neo Geo Battle Colisseum on PS2, Sin & Punishment on the N64 (I'm buying that!) and a MAS Systems Supernova (the supergun that was running a Neo 4-slot). I really wanted to try the SuperGrafx, but there was always someone playing Devil's Crush on the Turbo.
As for the booty I came home with, let's see here...
- Turbo: Ninja Spirit - 2600: Swordquest Earthworld (shut up, it was a buck, and I didn't have it yet), Sub Scan, Nexar, Spiderdroid (yeah, shitty Froggo games rule!), and Skate Boardin'. - NES: Hudson's Adventure Island w/box and manual. - Famicom: Otaku no Seiza and Pachi Com. - Odyssey 2 DVD from Packrat, containing old commercials and Odyssey 3 prototype footage. - 2 Super Mario Bros. dot diorama toys, 3 expansion characters for use therein, and a Dragon Quest pencil topper. - Plus all the free pamphlets, catalogs, stickers, magnets, and junk that was free for the taking around the show.
That's about all I can add. Overall the show was way cooler than I expected -- still has lots of potential for growth and improvement, but they're doing a great job already. I'd love to be involved myself some year. It was worth the 2-hour drive for me, and my buddy who I went with agreed. I'd definitely go back next time!

It was a great time, and I was happy to meet both Keranu and Torgo. K, I'm glad you enjoyed the game show/trivia contest. That thing could have been an absolute disaster, and I was sweating pretty hard beforehand. I was really relieved with how well it was received and pulled off.
The show was far more impressive than I expected. I've been to Classic Gaming Expo, and I was surprised to find myself enjoying MGC much more. They did an excellent job. The vendors were pretty well varied (despite having few Turbo games), and the amount of things they had on display and playable was astounding.
I bought tons of stuff, and what I remember of it is: Atari Lynx & game, Champions Forever Boxing, Talespin, Galaga 90, Ikari Warriors 2, Rastan, a bunch of Atari 2600 games, Ski or Die, Atari controller, and some other stuff. There was a guy out in the lobby (who I think may post on these boards, but I didn't get his name) who had an INCREDIBLE selection of games for trade only. He had a bunch of turbo titles that I desperately wanted, but he only accepted trades, and I didn't have anything of any value. He had Super Air Zonk, Bonk III, Panzer Dragoon Saga, etc. I would have loved to give him a wad of cash and say, "Go in there and buy any game(s) you want with this money. We'll call THAT a trade, dammit!" Oh, and I also almost bought a Neo Geo arcade cabinet, but when the time finally came to make my decision, it had been sold. DOH!
And I'll end with a minor plug: we're posting our podcast from the MGC, including a series of really interesting interviews, in the next day or two. If you guys want, I'll put the link here when it's up. Our interviews are with Scott Adams, Ellen Lurie (lead sound designer from Ravan), Ben Heckendorn (the incredible console hacker guy), Trickmaster Terry and Martin Alessi (from the old EGM days), Cap'n Rockenschpiel and Savory Cade (from Broadcast Gamer), and others.
So to sum up: MGC is well worth the time and money.

To start off my post, that Red Barron game is AWESOME! I never played or heard of it before, but damn that's a sweet game. I love vector graphic games and my little 9 year old brother loves them more, so I'll have to let him know about that.

Ahh, I figured that guy in the game room owned all of that stuff. He seemed to be a big Turbo fan too since he would play his Duo often. There was another guy there, and I think it's the guy TJ was referring to when he said " but there was always someone playing Devil's Crush on the Turbo", but man that guy was playing Devil's Crush for like a half hour at least. I think he belonged to some organization or something since he had one of the special tickets strapped around his belt buckle or something. I'm glad to see that Duo set up in the museum got good attention.
Oh and that Tempest 2000 with the rotary controller was badass! I am determined to get a Jaguar sometime soon because there are a ton of games I would like to play on it and the homebrew development for it alone seems to be worth it.
Quote from: "TJ"

I liked that guy's shop and the owner was fun to talk to, me and my bros kept making him laugh by telling him all these cheesy NES games we have played and like, such as Puss n Boots (which is a great game). My bro bought that Japanese Super Mario Bros. level trinket thing where you can attach a magnet behind the background with Mario on the front and sort of control him. He also bought a couple of those item boxes to go with it, which contained a flying turtle and something else. We also bought those old Nintendo Trick Cards which were pretty cool!

I would've loved those Famicom 3D glasses as well, but I couldn't afford the $100 price for them, despite being as rad as they were.

Those were wickedly awesome! I didn't buy a real cell, but I did buy one of those mini cel things for $2. I got the one with him drinking some potion.

Oh, and I also almost bought a Neo Geo arcade cabinet, but when the time finally came to make my decision, it had been sold. DOH!
I was talking to the guy who owned those MVS cabs. I'm not looking into getting a cab, but I do need a MVS PCB for the supergun I will be having made. The guy gave me his business card and he is located in Crystal Lake, IL, which I don't think is too far away from me. He doesn't seem to sell MVS carts or 1-slot boards, mainly just 4 and 6 slot MVS cabs since that's the only kind he buys.

Hmm, I can't recall seeing this guy anywhere, I wasn't in the lobby much however. That'd be cool if he posts on these boards.

It's great to see that every who posted their thoughts on here had a better time than expected. I heard the 2004 one was a blast and it seems this year did even better. I will certainly try to go next year as well. I hope turbo_sage posts his situation up on here :) .

When I lived in Kansas City, there was a Malibu Fun Center right by where I lived (Huge arcade, and they had Go-Karts.) They had a sit-down Red Baron that I would play every time that I went there.
I actually played the president of Microprose (Wild Bill something or other) at a CES on that game. I got a higher score than he did :D

LOL, no he doesn't own all the systems. ;) If you draw a diagonal line across the room, half was his half is mine. J.D. collects consoles and games from 1985 (NES) until present and specializes in a lot of hard to find Japanese and other imports. I collect everything from 1972 until present though specialize in the pre-NES material (1972-1985), as well as computers. That was also all my promo stuff on the middle table as well. Unfortunately I was sick most of this weekend and basicly just came down from my hotel room once in a while and for my two speeches. The rest of the time I was passed out, so J.D. was around most of the time in the museum.
The big Atari display was Rich's (goes by the name of Goodwil Hunter) by the way. He's a nother Milwaukee area big collector.

I thought I was a collector until I saw JD's collection a couple of years ago. That's just insane!! I didn't pay for much of my collection though, as when I worked at an EB in Kansas City, people would just give me their stuff to get rid of it. I got my Vectrex with 8 games for $15 :D

Yes, that would of been both of ours as well a couple of years ago. We partner together every year (I've been with Dan and Gary since Jagfest 2k1).
That's a good buy on the Vectrex by the way.

Thanks for getting pics of my duffle bag with sneakers on top in the museum area. ;)
Nice to see people pay attention to my pongs though, people usually gloss over those for the nifty Xbox's and PS2's. ;)

It was a great show, Steve. It's too bad you are too far away from us. The fellow with his head buried int he PowerBook was one of the Team Fremont members, not jleud though. I am working on my website article for the MGC right now and it will have 45 pictures of the convention, I'll post the link when I am done. By the way, jleud, did you guys record the contest on Saturday? I heard something from my bro that you guys did, but had sound problems or something? Please fill me in on any info.

Yes the show was terrific!!
I was the guy that had the trading tables going for a while. I had a majority of my Turbo and Saturn Collection.
I made a TON of insane trades. Got a Jaguar out of one deal.. and sold my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga for $200....:(
I still feel lost without my Panzer Dragoon.......

Hi all, I'm new here. If you listened to the latest Team Fremont podcast, I'm special guest Savory Cade from Broadcast Gamer.
The Midwest Classic was 12 kinds of awesome! Many thanks to the organizers, sponsors and participants for making it a fantastic convention. I'm sorry I've never been to it before since I live so close, but I'll definitely be going back next year. Oh the money I plan to spend next time...
Being around all that classic gaming goodness has rekindled my interest and has me regretting selling so much of my collection over the past few years. I decided I'm going to start recollecting Turbo stuff since of all the systems I've had/have, I spent the least time with it. :(
Hey Turbo Sage, you've got one hell of a collection. I was drooling over your stuff for awhile at the show. Sorry I didn't have anything more to offer in trade than some NGPC stuff. [/url]

As for my collection I traded away about 6 Turbo games   I gained one Sega CD game and 9 Jaguar games... thats good right???
I got rid of Lords of the Rising sun, Magical Dinosaur Tour, Fighting Street(Im gonna miss that one), Implode(sorry BT), and something else I can't think of at the moment.
But I think I made up for the losses with the games I got and the $$ I made, along with one of the best weekends evar!! And I TOTALLY cannot wait until next years!!!

Keranu, nice job on the article and photos.
To respond to one of the comments you made in the article, the big Atari "Video Game Selection Center" thing in the museum was just a store display unit. Back in the day, they had these set up at department and discount stores to demo Atari VCS games. You just picked the game you wanted to try before you buy, and could play 'til someone kicked you off. I remember playing Atari games on that unit myself when I was a kid. They were always interesting because they had high-quality built-in joystick and paddle controls, and the fire buttons were arcade-style. Anyway, that particular unit that was at the MGC was the Sears version, because as you probably know, Sears marketed the 2600 and Intellivision consoles under their own brand name.
I was really quite excited to see that particular piece of hardware -- it brought back some very vivid memories! :D

Post by: DHG Hunter on February 25, 2007, 04:28:48 PM
Sorry for dragging up an old topic, but I was searching for a few things via Google and wanted to answer some questions I saw here. =)
Quote from: Keranu
The game display room in the event hall had a Turbo Duo set up and some games with. The main two games the guy displayed on it were Devil's Crush and Dracula X, I don't recall seeing any other games displayed even though I saw a small stack of other Turbo games by the system (we couldn't change the game ourselves). Both games got good attention, especially Devil's Crush, which made my day.
Devil's Crush is Lance's (one of my friends and helper at the show) favorite Turbo game, so that probably saw a lot more play than normal, hehe. A few people asked to play Dracula X so I set that up... It's disappointing to see folks get frustrated with that one and put it down, however. Obviously its a great game if you give it some time. =)
Games were changeable if you found me or one of my guys. We'll probably have some shirts or something to set us apart this year. Other games I *think* I had at the show were:
- Legendary Axe 2 - Splatterhouse - Dungeon Explorer 2 - Flash Hiders - Gain Ground SX - Kiaidan 00 - Lords of Thunder - Police Woman Sapphire
There's probably another game or two that escapes me, but like you said, Devil's Crush and Dracula X dominated most of the game time. ;)
Quote from: Keranu
Also next to the Turbo Duo was a Super Grafx with the case of Aldynes and Battle Ace displayed next to it and next to that was a PC-FX, with the cases of Battle Heat and that women wrestling game. I believe that was all the Turbo-related things I saw there.
Everything was set up for the SuperGrafx, however, we ran out of TV's so I had to pick and choose what would be playable. We might have set it up for someone later on, I'm not 100% sure.
The PC-FX games were Battle Heat and Queen of Queens. I'd really like to get a copy of Zenki one of these days, but finding a reasonably priced copy isn't very easy, hehe.
We also had the Turbo Express there, however, the portables area that it would have been in got axed at the last second because we couldn't figure out an easy/safe way of making those playable. Plus, I'm extremely worried about burn-in with that system, lol.
Quote from: Keranu
torgo, by any chance were you the guy who seemed to be incharge of that room in the event hall with all the systems including the Duo with Dracula X?
Quote from: torgo
No, the tall guy in that room is the one that owns ALL of those systems. He was actually the first one to see Fantasy Star Soldier when I pulled it out of the "archives" back in '03/'04, so I gave him a copy after I saw how dedicated he is to the "craft."
Both Marty Goldberg (the guy you heard speak) and I put the room together. He has a lot of the pre-NES stuff and I basically cover everything post-NES. It works out nice because we can pretty much hit every console between the two of us.
I still have that Fantasy Star Soldier beta. =) I think I had it at the show too. Thank you! =)
Quote from: TJ
I really wanted to try the SuperGrafx, but there was always someone playing Devil's Crush on the Turbo.
There was a guy there that had never played Devil's Crush before and somehow figured out how to do the infinite points trick (timing it so that an enemy pops you back into the bonus area each time you bounce out). He absolutely destroyed Lance's record which he wasn't too happy with, lol. =P I think Lance worked at beating his own high score for much of the day after that. Hopefully all of the Turbo stuff can be playable this year since I believe you guys are doing your own area now. =)
Quote from: jlued686
Oh, and I also almost bought a Neo Geo arcade cabinet, but when the time finally came to make my decision, it had been sold. DOH!
I tried telling you it was a great deal, hehe. ;P As it turned out a friend of mine ended up buying it for her husband at the show. Nice wife. ;)
Quote from: martyg
LOL, no he doesn't own all the systems. ;) If you draw a diagonal line across the room, half was his half is mine. J.D. collects consoles and games from 1985 (NES) until present and specializes in a lot of hard to find Japanese and other imports. I collect everything from 1972 until present though specialize in the pre-NES material (1972-1985), as well as computers.
Yeah, that pretty much sums it, Marty. ;)
Quote from: keranu
Great pics, jlued. And I noticed you got one of our bandit hogging the Devil's Crush!
LOL, yeah, that's Lance. He was pretty upset at his high score going down like that. ;P

I already let Dan Loosen know that I'd be available to help with anything on the "turbo Fest" as well. I'll be staying right at the Olympia this year, so I'll be there all weekend.
I may be getting my duo modded by D-Lite soon, if he has time to do it. I just got my modded Neo Geo back from Jeff Kurtz yesterday, and I can't play it enough now. If I getthe Duo modded, I may bring it so that there's an extra available. Also, if anyone has an Arcade Card, I can bring my copy of Sapphire (I still need a card, so I just play it on ME right now.)

Woah. This topic is back!
The MGC was pretty rad last year, is there any information on the guests this year? I hope Marty gives another talk this year about history, that was pretty interesting. Too bad he only gave it because Mr. Baer couldn't make it.
If Team Fremont is coming again this year, we'll need to rig the selection so that Keranu represents LD on the gameshow instead of NASA and I. We totally beefed the game show. :-({|=

Ninjas wear this in the summertime, it's cooler than the full-body garb.
Seriously, though, that's NOT a Pac Man hat. It's doesn't even qualify as a hat + chinstrap. I don't know what it is, but my best guess is that it is Halloweenus Maskus Pac Man.

The MGC was pretty rad last year, is there any information on the guests this year? I hope Marty gives another talk this year about history, that was pretty interesting. Too bad he only gave it because Mr. Baer couldn't make it.
We'll have to ask Kamino if Marty is going to make another speech, I hope he does. Marty will be there regardless though. Kamino told me that he's trying to get David Crane to come this year, which would rule! We have to get all our Activision games signed by him.

Is anyone else going this year? I'm going to try to make it again this year, and I know the rest of the Crete Nerd HURD is as well.
Me and NASA are definitely going again, not sure about Quintin though but we'll see. There were around four people on this board that went last year but since we're holding a Turbo Fest, we're getting a lot more from here it seems. turbo_sage hopefully I won't miss you this time ;) .

I believe the GOAT Store had them for sale. They were all over the show, hehe.

I imagine he will again. He's give a speach every year it has been available I believe. I have a lot of respect for the people that get up there and do it... It takes a long time to prepare those speaches, and if nobody shows up it feels like a big waste. The panel area will be right in the middle of the Museum Area this year instead of being tucked away in a corner as it has been in years past.

Crete as in Crete, IL? That's not very far away from here... 8-[

We totally beefed the game show.
Hehe, I think the general consensus is that there will be more harder questions this game show rather than easier ones... We had actually planned the show with the thought that about every other question could be passed until a game was played, so we had like 12-ish games playable. However, everyone seemed to be more interested in taking a guess at the questions rather than playing the games which kinda sucked. I know TF really wanted Bonk to be played once, and it was passed over each time. :?

We're gonna need a lot of TVs!
About how many tables do you guys see yourselves possibly taking up? I've been trying to get a hold of Turbo_Sage via e-mail, but no luck recently.
I figure you're going to have a Turbo/PC-Engine + TV, Turbo Duo (or just plain CD) + TV, a PC-FX + TV, and a SuperGrafx + TV. So you should have about 4 playable systems, plus a Turbo Express perhaps.
I would also suggest bringing an extention cord and a few power strips just in case... They ran out of strips last year and we had to use a lot of our own to conpensate. It should be better this year, but best safe than sorry. =)
If you want to go over some of the stuff, feel free to e-mail me at my safe-for-boards e-mail at mwgc_museum@yahoo.com, or PM me and I can send you my real e-mail. I check both, however.
Later.

Turbo Grafx 16, Turbo Grafx 16 + CD, Turbo Duo, PC Engine + CD, Super Grafx (hopefully), PC-FX, at least two Turbo Expresses/PCE GTs, and maybe a PC (used for programing and game demos, unless we have a flash card to use). Each display will have it's own purpose, like one will be for five player games, another for niche titles, and another for rare goodies, etc...

Who the hell wears a black anime shirt AND black swim trunks(?) out in public? Thats so hilarious.
That guy was so rockin' to the max! I hope he comes this year. Him, a friend and myself sat up till like 1am in the hallway outside of the main doors playing Jaguar and PCFX. we were sitting around, and asked Dan if it was cool if we played some vids in the hallways...lol so we stole some tables and hooked up a TV and gamed! Was truly excellent. Too bad I didn't have an extra PCFX gamepad though- we had to take turns and watch each other play Super Power League and Zenki and a few others.
Christ- Now I REALLY can't wait till this years MGC!!!!!! Come on June!!!!!

We are indeed from Crete, Illinois! Where are you from, if I may ask?
I could literally throw a stone and have it end up in Crete. =P That close. ;)
Anyway...
I e-mailed Turbo_Sage with an early layout and a few details about your area. He can either pass along the details to you or I can e-mail them to you directly, your choice.
The show will certainly be more packed than it was last year. Where as the Wisconsin room was just the Museum and the panel/speaker area, this year all of the stuff in the Illinois room like the Underdog Chamber and Jagfest will be in the Wisconsin room this year, as well as a lot of other special areas like your Turbo Fest that we'll announce in the future. The entire Illinois room is going to be made up of tournaments and other events this year. The Olympia room (where you saw all of the arcades and vendors) should remain relatively the same.
To make this all fit we're maximizing the space in the Wisconsin room and we have a lot more tables available this year. It should be fun... For those that saw the museum area last year, this new layout is going to be a huge improvement.
Later.

I'm interested in the shmup tournament, I may sign up for it. I better get back in practice though, I'm not as good of a shmupper as I was 8 or 10 years ago... :P Also, I think this year I'm gonna spring for some of those wireless SNES controllers from Messiah.

Otaku Omaha doesn't have a Marty Goldberg speech, thus it is automatically not as good as MGC.
Also, there is no gay anime crap at the MGC, it is nothing but games.

At Dan Loosen's request, I will have my PS3 there, and I will have my 32-inch LCD HDTV to hook it up to. Also, I will be bringing the original Fantasy Star Soldier US pressed beta CD for the TG16 Museum.
If we can get wireless Internet working, I have the Warhawk beta for people to try out as well
I was going to bring my TurboExpress, but I'm already bringing my laptop, DS/games, and my PSP and games, so I think I'm leaving my Express at home.
For PS3, I will have 4 controllers, and to play we'll have: MLB 07: The Show Resistance: Fall of Man Motorstorm NBA Street Homecourt NBA 2k7 Ridge Racer 7 Virtua Fighter 5 (with 2 Hori Fighting Sticks for the PS3) Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Calling All Cars (4-player split-screen) Championship Sprint (Don't Bother) Mortal Kombat II Arcade (Awesome) Gauntlet II Wipeout (PS1) Destruction Derby (PS1) flOw Q*Bert Gran Turismo HD Japanese Hot Shots Golf 5 Demo Ninja Gaiden Sigma Demo Formula One Demo Super Rub a Dub Demo Japanese Folks Soul demo (Gorgeous) Warhawk Beta (If we can get an Internet connection)

But isn't bringing a PS3 to a classic gaming con...
MGC supports both new and old gaming systems. "Classic" can mean a lot of things to those that go there. To someone like us it might mean Turbo-era, to a kid it could be something like the Dreamcast's Sonic Adventure, or to someone else it could mean an Atari Pong machine. There's usually something for everyone, which is nice because I like the mix.
There was also a Wii and two networked Xbox 360's in the museum area as well, the latter of which had the Halo 3 beta going for half of the time both days. I think that one will be a "classic", hehe. ;)

I had a great time again this year at MGC! Met turbo_sage and hogged his PC-FX and SuperGrafx for a while, that was fun. :) Brought home a nice little haul of games, but if I had brought more money I certainly could have spent all of it. There were some dealers there with some really great stuff, both import and domestic. The arcade and pinball selection was okay, although I did get an original owner's manual for my Tron machine. Overall, it was a little bigger and a little better than last year's, so I'm definitely planning on going again next time!

Yeah, i had a blast once again. Many thanks to Dan Loosen from the GOAT Store for getting this together again. It was great to meet a couple of the PCEngineFX peeps finally.
Also, I FINALLY got a copy of Spriggan! I also picked up a US copy of Air Zonk, so I finally have that as well. I'll be talking about the show on our next podcast episode which should hit on Thursday.

All Wisconsin towns are impossible to pronounce if you aren't from Wisconsin. I swear it is some sort of conspiracy to keep us Flatlanders away from their state.

What is MGC like? What is there to do there? Would it be worth it to travel from California for this event?
To read what MGC is like, I'm going to, of course as usual, shamely promote my article here (http://lazerdorks.org/stunningarticles/mgc/index.html). (and don't forget MGC 2007 (http://lazerdorks.org/stunningarticles/mgc2007/index.html)!)
If you don't have any good classic video game shops or conventions in your area, it might be worth it depending your tastes. There was actually someone who traveled all the way from Nova Scotia to attend it once! Since you're from California, it would be easier for you to attend the Classic Gaming Expo (http://www.cgexpo.com/) in Las Vegas of course. However MGC is a good place to meet some PCEFXers of course ;) .
Title: Re: Midwest Gaming Classic
Post by: Hobo Xiphas on February 08, 2008, 06:55:51 PM
Once, maybe. Twice, no way.
MGC has lots of vendors, some good speakers, a pinball tournament, and a museum which has lots of games.
The vendors are pretty good. Lots of good deals, but quite a few bad ones as well. Lots of people selling arcade cabinets and parts if that is your thing, too.
The museum is pretty much the same every year.
The speakers haven't been announced yet, but I would bet on Marty Goldberg and Ben Heckendorn being two of them. Ralph Baer was going to go in 2006 but he got sick and couldn't come. :?
I have never done the pinball tournament thing, it too expensive for my tastes. Last year there was a shoot'em'up tournament too, but since Kamino is gone I don't think there will be another one this year.
The guys from Team Fremont do a game show style trivia contest which can be fun (especially if you were selected one year like two of us Lazer Dorks were). Keranu's heckling that year in Team LD's favor was the most hilarious thing I have ever seen, even if we beefed it and lost horribly to some genius kid.
Keranu wrote articles with pictures on Lazer Dorks on the 2006 (http://lazerdorks.org/stunningarticles/mgc/index.html) and 2007 (http://lazerdorks.org/stunningarticles/mgc2007/index.html) MGC.
EDIT: God damn it, K, you beat me to it.

Oh, last year there was a 'Turbo Fest'. Basically Keranu and turboSage and someone else from here (I forget who, sorry :x) set up a table full of turbo stuff to play. They even showed some of Nanto's cheesy videos on loop, hahahaha.
The Turbo Fest was featured on the Milwaukee local news with footage of Keranu, myself, and two of his brothers playing Bomberman '94. 8)

For those interested in seeing me making an ass out of myself during my infamous heckling, download this video (http://teamfremont.com/videos/MWGSC Segment 3.wmv) and I'll first appear about 20 seconds in (wearing a black flat hat and overshirt) and I yell my heckle around 1:26 into the video. The dude standing to the left of me really got close to me after I yelled that, it was kinda creepy 8-[ .
If you're interested in watching that whole game show, you can find it on the Team Fremont's site here (http://www.teamfremont.com/features/MGC_Game_Show_Video.php).

Yeah the lack of lots of arcade games in 2007 really hurt it. The vendors were better, but I'd rather have better arcade gaming.

The vendors were much better last year, I'll give you that. The lack of arcade games was pretty bad, too.
The problem is that the museum pretty much can't be improved because people will want to see the same games over and over. I mean, hell, I spent more time playing games that I already owned last year. :-#
Are you guys actually going to do Turbo fest again? Maybe you can put out the Mysterious Song beta or something, hahahaha.

Yeah this is a problem with the MGC. You really only need to go to it once because it will be mostly the same experience the next time. Of course I love to go to see a new Marty speech each time 8) .

I wouldn't mind doing it again and turbo_sage seems up for it. We have discussed revealing a demo of our TOP SECRET Frozen Utopia game at it! That would be the first time the game has ever been shown public after it's two years of development!

Well, if you want to go I guess I have to go too unless you can find someone to crash with since you can't get a hotel room until next year. ](*,)
The only Turbo thing I can bring is a copy of Far East of Eden II. But I can bring one smallish TV and one largish TV if you guys are short of that. I know that was your big problem last year.

Honestly, the best descriptions are the two articles Keranu wrote on Lazer Dorks that he linked to earlier.
Team Fremont probably has some videos and probably a podcast or two about MGC.
TurboSage has a couple of YouTube videos on it too, I think. Search for "Midwest Gaming Classic" on YouTube, it is the first result I think.
DHG Hunter here at PCEFX is one of the organizers of the show, he might show up in this thread again so you can ask him some questions directly.
Also, be sure to read this thread from page one, there is lots of good info in here.
My Summary: The 2006 MGC was awesome beyond compare. The 2007 MGC kinda sucked. As long as you don't take things too seriously, you can have some major fun. 8)

A little news about me- I will be a vendor this year! I plan on selling dozens of Consoles and hundreds of games. I can also lend a hand with Turbo Fest if I'm needed.
Also on Sunday(3/30) I got the ok to do a WORLD PREMIERE of Turbo Grafx Villains II movie on the BIG SCREEN!!! I'm not sure what time it will be at- but I will hand out flyers on Saturday to remind everyone from my gamEscape booth.
I hope any of you guys going from these forums will take 5 minutes and kick back to watch this little TG project I worked on the last few weeks. This will also be the first time this will be viewed by more than just myself! I will upload it to gamevideos.com and youtube.com the following week-

Since I just happened to have a few days off from work I took a look at exactly where the "Midwest" gaming classic is located... and it's in the mid to far east of the continent.
Why isn't it called the Mideast Gaming Classic?

How is Wisconsin far east? The east is the east coast, Ohio to Iowa is midwest, and west of Iowa/Minnesota/Missouri is the west.
Title: Re: Midwest Gaming Classic
Post by: SignOfZeta on March 28, 2008, 05:11:27 PM
Yeah, if anything Wisconsin is far too west to be midwest. Its pretty much on the fringe of being central.
It would be cool if they could move it around every year, maybe to the more populous areas of the midwest like someplace in northern Ohio or maybe Chicago. If I'm going to go that far for something I'd rather do MagFest.
I actually have a friend there this year but that's only because his wife's family lives in the area making this a combined trip.

Hi.
Ohio is not the Midwest, we don't want them. Especially the southern part, the Great Lakes area is okay though.
Iowa, Minnesota, and Northern Missouri can play with the cool kids. I'd even include the east river part of the Dakotas. A good guideline is that if it is between the Wabash, Ohio, and Missouri Rivers is it pretty rad.

Hahahaha. Oconomowoc is almost straight north of Chicago.
I don't think they are ever going to move it from Wisconsin since a lot of the people who organize it are from Wisconsin.
Also, flying in from places far away to go to MGC is pretty silly. You might as well go to CGE if you are going to do that, it is a lot bigger.

Yeah, two hours straight north by car...which puts it pretty far away from Chicago. "Midwest" isn't about longitude. Obviously you understand this since you are excluding Ohio, for some reason, but not the Great Lakes region even though Ohio is bordered by Lake Erie.
Southern Ohio is pretty terrible, I have to admit (Cincinnati aside)

3 from the south side\suburbs, but yeah. Aside from the tollways, the drive isn't bad so moving it Chicago would be silly (and more expensive!). Maybe living in South Dakota has screwed up my perception of drive times or something.

Stuff I bought:
game.com system complete in box and instructions, including Lights Out, HENRY (!), and Indy 500. - $25 Fighters Megamix (game.com) - $4 A ballsy SNES replica controller that sold with the original box design and even has the fricken Nintendo logo on it - $5 Hana Taka Daka (PC Engine) - $30 (thanks goes to Mad Gear for this one!) Panic Bomber (PC Engine Super CD-ROM2) - $10/20? (thanks goes to turboStar!) Air Zonk (Turbo Grafx 16) - $20 (thanks goes to turboStar!) Final Soldier (PC Engine) - $10 (brand new) Ka Ge Ki (Genesis) $5/10? (thanks goes to turboStar!) The Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey Mouse (Genesis) - $5/10? (thanks goes to turboStar!) Dungeon Explorer (Sega CD) - $10 (thanks goes to turboStar!)
Oh and I also got a signed King of Kong flier by Walter Day! Walter is a really, really nice guy.

Atari 2600: Dark Chambers, M.A.D., Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom, Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes (all loose) Milton-Bradley Microvision: Bowling (CIB) Famicom: Macross, Dracula-kun (both loose) NES: Earthbound homebrew cart PCE: Burning Angel (w/case + manual) N64: Sin & Punishment (CIB) Four back issues of Game Room magazine Arcade Ambience 1981 + 1983 CD's
Nice to run into Turbostar again :)
I was gonna buy a Twin Galaxies book from Walter Day and have him sign it but I kinda just didn't get around to it. And for the third year in a row, I considered buying the wireless SNES controllers from Messiah but decided not to. Maybe next year :P Also, I was disappointed that AtariAge was not at the show this year -- I wanted to pick up some more Atari homebrews. All in all though, it was another good show and I look forward to next year. I just hope they move it back to June again, I much prefer traveling when it's nice out!

Yeah, I'm torn on that. If it's in March next year it will coincide perfectly with the end of my work contract, but if it's in June, as much as travelling in the nice weather would be a treat, it's probably unlikely I'd be able to get the time off of work if I have just started a new job. We'll see what happens. I just want to be able to go.

Given the attendance this year, I doubt they'll be too worried about moving it to a time that people will want to travel more. Heck, they might have to find a bigger space if there are more people. The presentations were in the friggin hallway!

Hehe. What were some of the topics of the presentations?

They were actually really cool, just too hard to hear. There was one on how to buy pinball machines (I only saw this one in passing), Marty Goldberg talked about something or other (apparently he's reviving the Microprose name to sell accessories for modern PCs and consoles? I don't really know, I showed up late and left early), Walter Day talked about classic gaming in general, The King of Kong, and Twin Galaxies, Ben Heckendorn talked about his mod projects, and Trickman Terry and Sushi-X talked about working for EGM. It was a pretty impressive lineup.
The presentations by Walter Day and Trickman/Sushi-X were my favorites. Walter Day is nuts.

Walter Day is just plain awesome. And of course Marty Goldberg is my favorite speaker 8) . Yeah the hallway being used for the speaker room was lame, even more than last year's non-walled area.

Nice Apple //c pic on there. I used to be heavy into vintage Apple collecting (still am, to some degree). Anymore I just have an Apple //c+ and a //gs, the two best models by far.
And no, they certainly don't make them like they used to.

Thanks for putting up so many quality pictures. It makes it feel like actually being there.
Thanks for the comments. I had my brother take all the pictures this year, so he actually went and took a picture of practically each item in the museum area, while I usually just take a shot of each hallway to show them all off at once. He took some videos too, but I'm not sure if they're worth uploading.

Is that Phil Hartman and Bill Cosby in those pamphlets?
I'm pretty sure that was William Shatner in that computer pamphlet, although Phil Hartman did do at least one Intellivision(?) commercial.
Looks like you're right! Here's the high res version (http://www.lazerdorks.org/images/hartmancosbycommodore.jpg). I know what Phil Hartman commercial you are talking about and it's the first thing I thought of when I saw those pamphlets!

Hah! Just noticed you got a shot of me playing the Express. 8)
Yep! Noticed that while I was browsing through my pictures. I think you were playing Keith Courage.

I bet William Shatner could beat up Phil Hartman if they got into a fight with each other tomorrow afternoon at 1:36PM.
All while Bill Cosby is standing in the background cracking jokes. 8)

No way, Capt. Kirk couldn't handle a zombie.

Nah, I was playing Devil's Crush... I really wanted an Express after that, but I will resist temptation.

Nice pics, Keranu!
The Odyssey2 add-on in the photo is "The Voice," the O2 voice module. Check it out:
Also, what was up with that Donkey Kong machine in the competition room? It was some sorta hacked version with all different screens. I never really got the story on that.

I was wondering that myself. I think during Walter Day's speech, he was saying how that was some homemade game called Donkey Kong 2.

Indeed. I wanted to try it out, but the monitor was having issues as the time. Only red stuff was showing up, so it was unplayable. I did get to see some other people playing it when it worked, and it looked pretty interesting.

Sounds cool; was it this game (http://www.jeffsromhack.com/products/d2k.htm)?
Yup, that's it.

I really hate to pimp Lazer Dorks, but DHG Hunter (the guy who runs the museum room) posted a really cool companion piece to Keranu's article on our crappy little forums (http://lazerdorks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5793#p5793).
It talks about the past, present, and future of MGC from a behind the scenes perspective.

Hey maybe DHG Hunter should give a speech at the MGC about the MGC's past, present, and future 8) .

Well this is second year i have gone to the show and as always a great time and this year the Vendor room was awesome!
They had moved the show to earlier in the year and i think there was some worry about how many would show up this year but i think it went more than fine.
I plan on going next year and i might talk my wife into going but am not going to hold my breath on that one.
