Title: Best Console?
Post by: Tatsujin on February 06, 2008, 04:59:36 PM
help to vote for the best console ever exist up to present. i'm aware of, to do such a poll in a pce dedicated forum would push our
belowed system right to the top, so please try to release you from this forum and vote for the systems you really think they're the best.

Rules:

you can place your 5 most fav. systems in a ranking 1 ~ 5. The score for each system will be given away as shown below:

1st = 5 points
2nd = 4 points
3rd = 3 points
4th = 2 points
5th = 1 point

after 2 weeks from right now, i will sum up all the entries and the 10 best out of it will battle in a "head to head" poll for again 1 week!

you are completely free of how you vote for the systems of your desire. you're also free to add a small comment for each system, why you chosen it.

let's go :)

Is this assuming you are only running official software on the console commercially sold?

may be i don't understand your question in the right way. but as long the console was officially sold, so there is no limit to vote for that specific system of your desire (but no PC or other homecomputer stuff).

sorry, video game system only. definition: easy to use (put in cart or cd) and made for only one purpose, play and enjoy video games.

as for the fm towns or amiga, you can vote for the marty or the amiga cd^^

Well then MSX should be applicable. Stick a official cartridge or disk into a MSX, turn the power ON, and game loads automatically w/o any instructions from the end user. Easy cakes.

but now, there is this new 1-chip MSX2, which seems to be made for play some games only :)

Yeah, but it's really a full fledge MSX2 crammed into a blue box aimed towards programmers not just gamers. Attach a keyboard and you can begin coding in MSX-Basic or run MSX-DOS2. Hell, learn VHDL and add new features or turn the OCM into entirely new system like Famicom. The SD port allows you to have a mass storage device for anything including disk & rom emulation. Neat but expensive. I'm still waiting for the western counterpart.

I think I'll just put down Zemmix, which is a MSX system meant to run carts only. Hey, it was advertised as console.

Sorry for all of this non voting stuff, but so just to be clear.  We are voting for the best consoles, not the best librarys of software, correct?  My first question was about software too, not hardware.

No order.

SNES, PS2, PSP, Genesis, TG-16.

so my votes go for:

1st = PC Engine (sorry, but there isn't anything which can come just close to my peace of love  )
2nd = SFC (great console, with a lot of nice games during the whole 16bit era. had/have a lot of fun with it)
3rd = MD (same as for the SFC)
4th = PS2 (since it's also a PS1 (at least for about 99,7% of all the games), it got a huge amount of quaility 2D and other arcade stuff)
5th = Famicom (great and succesful 8-bitter with a huge library of funny games. i'm sorry for the SMS, which comes just next to it)

basically we're voting on the hardware only, but if you love a hardware because its software, then that would just fit! as i said, you're totally free of why voting for a system.

if you had read the rules, you would know, why i need the order. otherwise it can't be put into the endanalysis. hence it's just valueless.

1. PS2 - The PS2 really has the best library of games ever.  It also is backed up with solid hardware.  The face that it plays PS1 games and has a HD really keep it in the number 1 slot.  A weak laser is a problem which has plagued many consoles, so I will not fault it for that, considering the software library.

2. PSP - It's the ultimate hand hold system.  It's games are between PS1 and PS2 in quality and it can play all the PS1 games.  On top of that it has an emulator for nearly every console with less power than it.  Tons of homebrew also keeps the software library fresh.  Heck, you can even torrent with it!

3. Neo Geo Home System - It brought arcade goodness to the home screen the only proper way to do it, without a translation!  Sure the games cost more than should ever be allowed, but no other console at the time could claim the graphics or gameplay the Neo Geo had.

4. 3DO - One of the most ambitious consoles ever made with a solid, if small, library to back it up.

5. Virtual Boy - Still today, it has the best 3-D games ever made.  Sure they are all in red, but wow are some of them 3-D.  It also looks like something from the future.  Too bad it has no good 3-rd party stand.

An Misa...wow, you picked some of the shittiest systems ever. I'm appalled!
Title: Re: Best Console?
Post by: nodtveidt on February 06, 2008, 11:24:55 PM
I will vote based on development practices of consoles I have actually developed for or simply experimented with.

#1: Nintendo DS
This is a little bag of kick-ass when it comes to development. It opens up whole new worlds of development techniques and game design considerations. The hardware is rock-solid, even if it is a little limited, especially in the RAM department...that just makes you plan better and make better use of your resources though.

#2: PC Engine
While not as easy to develop for as the NDS, the PCE is really a marvel under-the-hood. Again though, a small amount of RAM really makes you plan your production carefully. The nice graphics circuitry allows you to do some pretty funky stuff that you don't see very often on other older consoles.

#3: Neo Geo CD
Again with nice solid hardware and great graphics ability. The huge amount of RAM really helps. Not having to worry about "tile memory" and "sprite memory" is really really nice.

#4: Sega CD
What makes this one stand out is the fact that you have a standard CDROM format to work with. Sure the graphics hardware may be a little limited but there's enough RAM to do some pretty nice stuff regardless.

#5: Commodore 64
Keep in mind that this machine was developed as a game machine; the keyboard was tacked on at the last minute to appeal to the common user. Regardless, this was a very sweet machine for its time and still has a few games that are unrivaled in modern gaming. Coders were always trying to figure out new ways to trick the VIC, such as the infamous 32 sprite trick!

4: Megadrive/Genesis
5: Sega Saturn
Title: Re: Best Console?

1.) Daewoo Zemmix - The msx console from Korea. It could only play MSX cartridges, but also Famicom games through an adaptor. Now that's awesome.

2.) Neo-Geo - The console of my childhood dreams. Arcade perfect.

3.) PC-Engine (briefcase set) - The original white console was compact and slick. It's dated but NEC had the right idea to allow the older console to access the newer games with CD-Rom attachment and arcade card. Pure genius and they had better success with the upgrades than Sega did.

4.) NES/Famicom - Even after the system ceased production, there are tons of homebrew games and hardware being made today. Such the Flash cart, which seem like a dream until recently.

5.) Sega Saturn - For the arcade ports, mainly shmups.

1) PCE- I actually have a US Turbo- but it becomes so much greater withthe converter so my vote goes to the real thing.
2) NES- Too many games, too many memories.  The real king of the modern home console.
3) COLECOVISION- man I was just looking at all the titles I owned back in the day for this and they were all 100% classic.  This was the first console I owned to make me fall in love with video games.  Atari was just like a curiosity for me- exciting at first and then boring as hell the next month.
4) COMMODORE 64- I'm an oldschool guy- memories, memories, memories.  Bruce Lee, Summer Games, Wizard, Jumpman Jr., Arkon, Dr. J vs Larry Bird, those stupid breakdancing games, Impossible Mission, Hardball, that's the good stuff.
5) Shit do I have to pick another?  Okay- I like the SNES but my 8-bit love is a little stronger- I'll have to go with SEGA MASTER SYSTEM.

Well I have different takes on what my personal favorite consoles are and what I think the best consoles are. I'll list both.

Favorites

1. ) Turbo (this includes all formats on it)
2. ) Genesis
3. ) NES
4. ) Neo Geo
5. ) Vectrex (a system dedicated to vector graphics, how can you not appreciate it!?)

Best

1. ) NES
2. ) Genesis
3. ) Turbo
4. ) Saturn
5. ) Playstation

Of course these are quick lists I made since I have to leave for work soon, but it gives a general idea on what I think.

Title: Re: Best Console?

...not easy...

1. Turbo Duo - the look and the capability. The Turbo/PCE debuted in 1987 and was still releasing games into 1994 (if not longer. I've never actually been clear on when software stopped being mass produced for the PCE/Turbo).

2. NES - Not the best hardware, but tons of software make this system a second favourite of mine.

3. Xbox - Halo and Halo 2, Burnout 3, EA Sports games (all were superior on the Xbox), Xbox Live (Sony has never even come close to the functionality of Xbox Live), the Xbox Media Center (my Xbox is getting more use now with xbmc than ever before).

4. GBA SP - Not only can I play old NES and SNES games on this extremely well designed portable, but I can also play old arcade classics as well. Oh, and not to mention that the GBA will also emulate Turbografx games. I'll have to try that out at some point. Here's an emulation comparison video of a GBA vs GP2X:

5. SNES - Though I've never owned one, I've logged many, many hours on this baby. Whether it was Street Fighter II, Rock 'n Roll Racing, Zelda, R-Type games, or Star Fox, my thumbs got sore on this machine.

Honourable mention goes to the Atari 2600. It's just classic. I killed Bezerk....killed it.

Should portable systems really count as consoles though? To me, I always classified consoles as video game systems that hooked up to your TV (or came built into their own respected monitor, like Vectrex  ) and loaded games using whatever type of media form.
Title: Re: Best Console?

yeah..literally a portable is a handheld and not a console. but since the usage of both is almost the same, i would count it to the console category, or let's simply say "video game systems".

Here are the consoles that I choose for this voting:

1. PlayStation. My favorite console of all time! Tons of great games on it and I've had so many fond memories. I don't know where I would be if it never came into my life!
2. Nintendo DS. My favorite handheld of all time. I've had some great times with the games that I've played for it, plus it is able to play Game Boy Advance game when need be. I also like its style of 3-D graphics (along with the PlayStation).
3. TurboGrafx-16. Quite an impressive console. Its graphics and It's also able to play Super CD-ROM game, too. I can't wait to play its games in real experience somehow.
4. Nintendo Wii. So much exploration of the past is possible through Virtual Console. It also has a number of more interesting games to me than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It can also play GameCube games, which there are definite titles I want for that system.
5. NES. Lovely. Although I've only played eight of its games through emulation technology on other consoles, I've had happy moments with them. I would also like to explore more from this console to experience the great classics that it had brang for its time.

He constantly links me to high quality threads in #lazerdorks.  I couldn't resist posting in the MGC thread when Marty showed up.  :-&

I had an old account before this one back when you had to register to read the site (I think...?  Maybe I am forgetting things in my old age.). Maybe I should switch to that one again as my PPD is over 1 again.

Anyways, to stay on topic, I seriously think you can't beat the Saturn if you include Japanese releases.  It honestly has everything.

I'm not a big fan of ranked lists, but I will say that I enjoy Sega Master System 3D more than Virtual Boy 3D.  It's 3D coming out of my god damned TV!  It's so real it's... SCARY!  Get a bunch of 3D glasses and a few miniplug Y-adapters and all of your friends can watch you play in 3D as well!  Not even the Playstation 3 has this kind of awesome power.

1.  PCE (fully equipped) - I haven't had this one for very long, but I already have more games for it then anything else.  I keep finding
more and more games I want.  Every day I seem to find something new, like I'm digging in Santa's magic sack.
2.  Saturn - I love this thing, so many good memories.  Still actively buy games, but I have a shopping list, and its all I want to buy.
3.  Genesis/CD/32X - The console I grew up with.  Many great games, but there's not much more for me to discover with it.
I have what I want and thats it.
4.  NES - Great system.  Personally I find Nintendo has gotten weaker and weaker.  Only system of theirs I actually like.
5.  PS2 - PS2+PS1=many great games.

Honorable mentions belong to the NeoGeo AES (for its raw power), and PC-FX (for its sex appeal)

1. NES - this is what I grew up with originally and it has some of the greatest games ever. Best video game music of all time.
2. Super NES - Great overall system for the 16-bit era. I spent more money renting different games for this than what I bought for the system. There was just so many good games to play on it, especially RPGs and action sidescrollers.
3. Neo Geo AES/CD - Ever since I saw games like Fatal Fury, KOM and BB Stars, I had to get one some day....and I did. The system is just sheer power and has the best 2D fighters
4. Playstation - So many great games were made for this system. This is what made CD-Rom take off, at least it did in the US. The Saturn of course also helped a lot.
5. Playstation 2 - The first 3D system to really impress me with its use of it. I also like the DC a lot but the PS2 just has a lot more games I like.

Next systems in order would have to be TG-16, Genesis, DC, and Saturn.

Actually I think both the TurboGrafx-CD and the Sega CD were responsible for "making CD take off".  When the 3DO, Playstation and the Saturn came around, CD was the new standard which Nintendo balked at.  CDs were not really used in any console after these three.  You can count the PC-FX in this group as well.

You're quite right to say that the PlayStation had made the standard for using CDs for video games, Nintendo putting down the idea, and that the TurboGrafx-16 CD (as I refer it to) was the first initialize this for the US. However, it is quite debatable if the Sega Saturn, or any console prior to the original PlayStation, had much to contribute for this since they had all done poorly in the market.

I consider the TurboGrafx-16 CD as the best console to use CD-ROMs before the PlayStation, with the Sega CD in second.

I have to disagree here, as the PC Engine CD was nowhere near a commercial failure.  It may have underperformed in the US market, but it's crazy to think that Sega and Sony based their media decisions on what was popular in the US rather than in Japan.

I was only referring to the US market in this statement, however. Of course, in Japan, the PC Engine had truly started the usage of CD-ROM in video game, which eventually made it the standard for them there. The Sega Saturn had success in the Japanese market, also.

Actually the Saturn was beating the Playstation 1 for quite a while.  It was considered a successful console over there.  It is sad because some of Sega's other consoles should have been at least as successful, but they weren't.  If the Mega Drive were more successful as well as the SMS and Dreamcast, I could only dream about the great games we would have seen by third parties.  Imagine a library of GREAT Sega CD games.  Didn't really happen.  The SMS definitely needed more Japanese love as well.  Perhaps... just perhaps... we could have had more mahjong games.  :)

Well if it was Microsoft or Toyota or Hasbro or something I'd be with you there, but Sega is something special. I want them to succeed because I love them. There is so much cool about Sega that goes way beyond the games or the hardware or anything. Shenmue 2, Segata Sanshiro, Yukawa Hidekazu, Isao Okawa, Blue Skies, Segagaga...not even Nintendo has a corporate identity with such heart.

Well the PS1 was the most popular CD thing for its time, but by the time it was released we were all quite familiar with CDROM. Manhole on the Mac...when was that? Late 80s. Then TG-16, which was playing CD-G demos in the Toys R Us stores. Then the Sega CD which on one hand was a huge flop, but f*cking anyone who knew anything about games was familiar with it. You could rent it almost anyplace that had games, and it sold a shitlaod of units, honestly. Then CD-i which ran late night infomercials ("Interact, Dave") for years. Windows 95, and Performa Macs from that time also brought CDROM into the computing mainstream. The 3DO, as shitty as it is, was a well known machine. Then you had the Jag CD, the Amiga CD32, Playdia, PC FX, the Saturn (only about a month before the PS in Japan, I think) and God knows what else.

By the time the Playstation was released CDROM was fully entrenched.

I have read somewhere that financial difficulties had burdened SEGA from having much success with their consoles. The reasons for this seems to lie on the fact that they had given their consoles add-ons or upgrades. The Sega Saturn was also cheaper than the PlayStation was over there in order to help with sales possibly a little bit. Once the Dreamcast was released three years later in attempts to save them from this trouble, it was already too late. This is also why the Dreamcast was discontinued in 2001.

Basically, that is correct. People have a really f*cked up understanding of the fall of Sega. The DC was doing well enough to support itself, but not well enough to make up for huge losses from the past. The disastrous handling of the Saturn in the US (his initials aren't "BS" for nothing) in particular was hugely expensive.

The DC was discontinued as part of a strategy to get support for Sega games on other machines. Games like Gun Valkyrie, Sega GT 2002, Panzer Orta, Virua Fighter 4, and Rez all would have been DC only if they weren't bribed into putting them on other machines as exclusives. The most blatant move was Shenmue 2 for XB in the US, which tried to force US DC gamers into buying a shitty Xbox and waiting a year to play a game that was cancelled on DC two weeks before release. In the end the smart ones all just imported it from the UK.

As for the pricing though, I'm pretty sure that both the SS, and PS were 40,000 yen, or very close to it, when introduced. There were eventual mark downs on the SS, but the same was true of the PS.

One thing that was weird is that the Saturn came out before it really came out in a sense. I remember putting down a $50 deposit and $20 to rent the system from Blockbuster Video in May 95. There were only 3 games to play, Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon and Clockwork Knight. I wonder if this kinda hurt the Saturn in anyway as these games were pretty generic, although Panzer Dragoon was pretty good. In Sep 95 and a little later it was like a different system when VF 2, Guardian Heroes, etc.. came out. By then most everyone I knew got the PS instead it seems. Games like Tekken, Twisted Metal, Warhawk, Philosoma, Ridge Racer, Air Combat etc.. just caught more interest to most people I guess.

I am glad a friend of mine bought the Saturn also after he got his PS1. I got to see a lot of great games and eventually bought one myself around 97. What sucks is as soon as I bought my Saturn the market was about dead for it US wise. Hell Dragon Force alone was one of the main reasons I bought it back then. Later on I went import crazy buying, Radiant Silver Gun, X-men vs. SF, D&D Collection, and most other Capcom arcade games. I have to admit that out of ten people I knew, one or two had a Saturn and all of them had a PS1 by Christmas 95.

The same could be said of NEC's US marketing plan - what a debacle that was. If they launched the Turbo/PCE in the US properly, the Genesis would not have had the market control that they did. Though the Nintendo third party controls would still have been a nightmare. Hindsight...
Title: Re: Best Console?

I really don't think a well run Sega would have been as cool. By that mean that I seriously don't think that the products that came out of them would be the same. I mean, look at Sega now. Now they are doing much better financially but since killing the DC they've produced only a half dozen decent games (Feel the Magic, Rub Rabbits, Yakuza, Sonic Rush, Outrun 2, VF5) When the DC was alive they made a really good game...just about every month. Segagaga is one of Sega's greatest games, and its greatness is predicated on the player understanding that Sega was dying. The same can be said for Sakura Wars 4, the end of which...is quite a tear jerker if you get the metaphor.

A well run Sega of America could have been nice though. For example; buying the back cover of every game mag in the US to advertise Panzer Saga while not actually producing enough copies for people to actually buy...that's just stupid. Killing the Saturn early and deciding to release virtually nothing for over a year between the SS and DC...a horrible business decision.

I play games because I think it is fun. I could care less about who made the game I'm playing, or who made the hardware that I'm playing the game on. If the company that made the game or hardware goes bankrupt or stops doing whatever it is that they're doing, I don't care. Okay, the troll has gone away for the time being, so I feel like I can reply without encouraging the little shit.

The reason you should care about a company you do not own is simple:

you do not live in a vacuum.

I'll explain. Imagine you like comics. At first, you go to the obvious, nearest comic book store. Let's say, hypothetically*, Ground Zero comics. The manager is named, hypothetically, Dave.
Dave is a dick. Frequently. he pulls the old "this isn't a library"; he sells prizes intended to be given away to customers; he steals stuff and blames employees; but mostly it's just bad customer service, because he's a dick.
So you start going to other comic book stores. None are perfect, of course, but some are better than others.
One, hypothetically, is called tenthpenny, run by a hypothetical guy, Mark, who is awesome.
Sadly, people didn't go to his store enough; people didn't talk up his store enough; people didn't care enough.
And it went away.

That is why you should care about companies you don't own. If you don't, things they have, make, or do will not be there anymore, and you'll have little choice but to go to the bad old places again.

*by 'hypothetically' I mean 'absolutely true story.'
