God how I am beginning to hate that f*cker. And I am a fairly loyal Mac user. However I never jumped on to the iPod or iPhone bandwagon because I don't need a fancy phone and MiniDiscs still rule the earth.
-
I won't lie, I absolutely love my iPod Touch. It's my mp3 player and faux-netbook. Life is so much more fun without lugging my laptop around anymore. However, as a gaming (and application) platform, developers are not willing to sink tons of $$$ and time and energy into a project when basic, simple "casual" apps/games provide a safer return on investment. Maybe this will change in the far future, but certainly not anytime soon.
Hmmm, and we thought the crap:quality ratio was bad on the PSP and DS.
Quantity is not the metric that we, folks who love games, care about.
The depth and long-term immersion offered by many PSP and DS titles has yet to appear on the iPhone OS... and it will be interesting to see if developers for iPhone will be willing to go that route. I hope they do, but, I must admit, it doesn't look promising. Many genres (RPG's) are non-existent on the iPhone...
Maybe we will see more "traditional" PSP/DS titles ported to/tailored for the iPhone OS, but I fear we will continue to see a sea of shallow, short-attention-span games, with an occasional gem lurking about.

I bet on my ass, when that slide showed up:

Steve Jobs should've stayed in retirement, as his bullshit tactics and outright lies are making Apple look more atrocious than even Microsoft in its tyrannical heyday.
No Multi-Touch user interface - Motion control and touch screens are little more than gimmicks and can't match the precision and tactile response of 'real' controls.
Games are expensive - As is Apple hardware, but people will gladly pay for more content, so what's your point? Besides, only a fool would think that developers are going to invest the time and money to produce a full fledged game, and then turn around and sell it for peanuts at Apple's App Store (i.e. - real games cost real money).
No App Store - Grasp at straws much? They may not share the same name, but the DSi Shop and PlayStation Store fulfill the same purpose as the Apple App Store.
No iPod - Another war of semantics here, as both the DSi and PSP are competent media players.
Die in a fire, you lying piece of shit.

Umm... Actually it was Phil Schiller (sp?) that said that, and not Steve Jobs. ;P

Are you trying to tell me that some marketing hump is guiding the company's actions? Apple's obtrusive ways extend beyond this single slide, and last I checked, Steve Jobs is still their CEO.

Agreed. Jobs is absurd. The iPhone is already outclassed by Samsung, Nokia, LG, etc. And if you've ever tried using the iPhone for gaming you'll know that it sucks for that purpose. Playing a platformer or shootie like Galaga with touchscreen controls is a god-awful experience. And I keep getting text messages from a friend who has an iPhone, but I can never understand what he's saying because the iPhone's keyboard interface is a P.O.S. (i.e. I dance yer time in pool. = Want to catch a movie tonight?)
I appreciate that Apple makes quality hardware, but I just can't stand the self-righteousness of Steve Jobs and his claims that the Apple experience is something next to nirvana. Windows XP still suits me fine. hehe
-
Of those 21,000 entertainment titles on the crApp store, how many are quality titles?
I doubt any games on there can compete with Dracula X, the Yuna/Sapphire pack, or the RPGs on the PSP
or the anime cutesy amazing games on the DS like My World My Way, The Worlds Ends Here, the castlevanias etc.
Apple hardware is expensive, its not the quality they claim (my macbook DVD drive, and battery died in <3 months.... my iMac screen went apeshit...... ), and its not the best thing ever.
Id take a Win98se powerhouse w/ AOL, properly configured DOS memory management, FastTracker II, Paintshop Pro 7, and my stash of 90s PC games any day. At least if something breaks I can dig in a box and replace the card without paying out the ass for another overpriced card.
Going to the mac store is like walking into an elitist country club full of guys that barely know what they are talking about.
At least, around here it is.
so,I usually go in and start playing Jump by van halen on the music setup. It ruins their day since THEY CANT GET IT OUT OF THEIR HEADS
-
those stupid MAC followers applauded with big bluster!
No, Iphone and Apple followers, not necessarily Mac people. Macs aren't even their primary market any more. I am a mac person (who also owns a PC), though I am a Mac "user" and not a "follower". Followers belong in cults. I personally think Apple needs to do away with the super-elitist commercials as it makes the company as a whole look really bad. Just because I use a Mac doesn't mean I wander the streets and comment about how much PCs crash and the such. Phuggin' Apple.
I also hate Apple Stores. What I REALLY hate are the "geniuses". They hire just about anybody, they don't even need to be a real, certified genius. Just talk to them and you'll see. Plus their store layout is a bitch and their employees also seem very elitist.
-
I run Linux primarily, but I also have an XP tower and a vista work machine.
I'm not a fan of Mac's in general, but I think the iPhone is the greatest hand-held device I have ever owned. It's a freaking tricorder from Star Trek.
After over 2 years with my 8GB original; I see having another communication device impossible.
Dammit Jim, I'm an iPhone not a Mac user!
-
These are general counter-points, I just happened to pick ceti's post for convenience :)

The iPhone / iPod Touch is great for certain games that play to the strengths of the iPhone. Word Fu, for example, is absolutely awesome, and without the no-lag touch screen, this game would flat out suck (even with a mouse). There are tons of awesome games that brilliantly incorporate the touch screen.
Unfortunately, for games that need a direction pad / joystick, the iPhone can never satisfy.
As for the touchscreen keyboard = it rocks. I'm just as fast and accurate on the virtual keyboard as I am on my wife's Blackberry. But, I must say, it is much more pleasant to use the touchscreen, because it is less work (I don't have to physically press the button). I know some folks love the real keyboard, but I don't miss it at all.
In fact, if you've sat next to folks who CLICKETY-CLACK on their Blackberry, you know how annoying they can be for others. I feel bad for folks who suffer through my own CLICKETY-CLACK when I used my phone.
Did I mention that I edit html/css files and upload/download them via an editor/FTP app on my iPod? That's awesome. I have so much fun with my iPod that it is ridiculous.
And, if I could keep Verizon, I would gladly get an iPhone. Maybe when iPhones are available with Verizon, I'll splurge. Until them, my iPod Touch is the greatest gadget, ever. It's like my goddamn second child.
Also, I just want to say that PSP and DS are TOO BULKY for me on my commute. When I'm not writing or reading or listening to stuff on my iPod, I'm happy to play some games on it, even if Raiden won't be one of them.
I don't represent the average gamer, though. I have only a passing interest for most stuff on PSP and DS, especially considering the prices. Personally, I prefer console games to satisfy my gaming appetite--the portable games are just a temporary fix when I'm commuting.
I feel sorry for all the folks who haven't experienced the joy of these gadgets from Apple. They are fun.
:)

All of the genius sales folk in the applestore by me are ...to put it bluntly: asshats.
One told me I wouldn't be able to do any C programming on one without a software package and extensive updates. What he meant was, I wouldnt be able to use XCode and its horrible mess of an interface. GCC comes stock on a macbook. I don't need some cracked out mess of a software suite to write crap that gets run in Terminal....
they told me ubuntu runs best on macs because "macs work", or whatever that stupid phrase is. I replied with "oh thats nice, f*ck Ubuntu. i use Fedora"---->Reply---->"Oh, you can only use real Linux installs with mac"
"Fedora is part of redhat, how much more real did you want to get man"--->Reply--->"Oh im not familiar with Redhat" ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)
then there were all the times id ask questions and get "uhhhhhhh" and "hang on".
They are all hipster coffee house douchebags that use their macs to blog, pretend theyre artists in photoshop, and play WoW since its the only new game the mac can run that has any ounce of entertainment to it.
I actually LIKE macs, and OSX. I just hate their marketing scheme and their mindset. My Windows 7 (omg win7) machine hasnt froze and its been turned on for 3 months running games.
Them saying Mac can replace PC is about as uneducated with computers as you can get.
though, Mac and PC is a stupid way to look at it anyways. theyre all PCs. Ones just all in-house and not IBM compatible so they decided to separate themselves.
dopes.
Apple should just cut the bullshit marketing, stop convincing their customers that theyre part of some zen computing experience, and get with the times.

Why can I get a Mac Pro with dual W5570s (roughly $1000 each), yet the top graphics card option is a lowly gt120? I take it that 'pro' is most certainly not short for professional. :?
-

I take extreme offense to this statement. To insinuate that WoW has any quality aspects really makes my blood boil!

For gaming I take it that card probably sucks. But Macs can't play games, so they don't need higher-spec cards. Is there any reason why you couldn't get the cheapest, shittiest card and replace it with one of your choice? It is called "Pro" because professionals do not play games. They work. Macs cannot run games, hence they can only work (and download porn).

lolmax!!
My brother just got a PowerMac laptop. He loves it, though he has a little touch of the Mac l33t bug now. He mainly uses it for music recording and such.

Ok, I'll weigh in again.
Anyone have an Ant Farm as a kid? When its busy, It's like an Ant farm in the Apple Store. They even have the big glass walls. Total chaos with people falling all over each other, waiting their turn to talk to someone. No lines. People pissed and angry because a 30 minute mall trip is taking 3-4 hours. My advice? Call ahead and make an appointment, so you can walk in and walk out. Avoid the headache.
The emo turtleneck mac people do exist. Linux people make fun of them constantly, usually because of their utter lack of technical knowledge and they bought their Macbook Pro on the premise and belief that the $3500 machine also includes a PhD in Computer Science.

Sounds like that guy was teh Linux poseur. There are a few "geniuses" at my store that don't deserve the title.
However, there are also some amazingly gorgeous "Mac Genius" women at my branch. I try to talk to them, if possible and I smile like this --->

You obviously know very little about workstations. They're not cutting edge, but GT120 cards are actually fairly competent gaming cards; that doesn't make 'em appropriate for use in a workstation, though, as some professional software simply will not use accelerated drivers with anything other than a workstation board (i.e. - Quadro or FireGL).
Is there any reason why you couldn't get the cheapest, shittiest card and replace it with one of your choice?
Sure I could; I could also assemble the computer from the ground up, but that's not the point. Shouldn't a computer that 'just works' (as Apple likes to tout in their adverts) not necessitate having its hardware tinkered with immediately after purchase? At the very least, they should offer professional level graphics as an option in a supposedly professional machine.
It is called "Pro" because professionals do not play games. They work. Macs cannot run games, hence they can only work (and download porn).
So Apple professionals don't do DCC, eh? I repeat: you know nothing of the needs of those that buy workstations.

Necromancer, I really think you need to work on your sarcasm detection. Stop taking everything so seriously. :)
I just checked the Apple store and the top graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, not NVidia GT120.
-
I just checked the Apple store and the top graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, not NVidia GT120.
ATI made a top graphics card?
When did that happen?
Lol, WoW is a fun game if you play alone, or with friends.
I dunno, for a computer that "just works" it sure didnt do much for me that my PC wasn't already doing.
My reasoning for not replacing my Macbook after I spilled pop on it:
FruityLoops + CoolEdit kicks the piss out of garage band
Photoshop and PSP9 are on PC also (Though I mainly use NeoPaint)
I don't make movies so all that software is irrelevant
Both computers can go on the interwebs and do IRC/AIM (My friend who only uses his macbook for internet surfing is a dumbass, I swear)
Mac + Games = ROFLCOPTER
so I sold the broken mac for 700$, bought a gateway, used it for a year, sold it, and got my current HP which for <500$ can run UO, WoW and PerfectWorld at the same time....
It also lets me plug my guitar and midi interface in and make music
and has a numpad!
-
I dunno, for a computer that "just works" it sure didnt do much for me that my PC wasn't already doing.
Surely you don't buy into Apple's elitist advertising, do you? Those advertisements are probably the WORST thing they can do for the brand as people generally do not like being talked down to. People have really started to resent Apple. Sure, people who already were Apple fanboys will love them and they may convert some old people, but I don't see much potential beyond that using the current advertising campaign. As said before, they're both PC''s and no PC "just works" or is 100% trouble free.

At the time I was laptop hunting and my school had deals between Apple and Gateway. I got my mac book relatively cheap and took it home thinking I got a nice lightweight laptop with a crisp display, and a UNIX core to replace my dying NEC laptop. It seemed like it would be great for C/C++ programming, and garageband might be ok.
Once the glitter of a brand new laptop wore off in a month and I deemed the software on it inferior to PC stuff....., and then my DVD drive and battery died, I was like "-_-" and said "I could've got this kind of functionality out of my NEC"
Before I replaced the macbook with a new gateway (that sucked so hard I sold it) I pulled my NEC VersaPro VA10J with CDRom, and worn out battery.
I upgraded the Fedora linux install on it and was like "Hey look its like my macbook only it JUST WORKS".
my iMac that I got cheap from ebay was also a piece of crap.
and dont get me started on the unmighty mouse. why go against the grain and have one button just to be different.
you dont see people walking with 1 f*ckin shoe to set themselves apart.
I really would like to see what the common user-folk to with their macs to justify the purchase price.
I can understand Pixar, or like some HUGE art place that uses them exclusively for painting/art....
but what does the common websurfer get for the tripled price?
-
but what does the common websurfer get for the tripled price?
Pretentiousness.
-
Actually protection from viruses when surfing for porn like Nat pointed out. When you have a giant room filled with a thousand hard drive bays with 1 TB drives in each bay all filled with downloaded porn, you'll agree.
and dont get me started on the unmighty mouse. why go against the grain and have one button just to be different.
Actually it has two buttons. Even more if you want to get creative with how you use it. But it comes standard with left and right click, plus scroll wheel. But nobody is forcing you or anyone else to use Apple's mouse. I have been using a MicroSoft optical mouse for about 10 years now. Love it and works perfectly. No drivers to install, even back when I was using OS9.
-
you can download pron virus free on windows if youre smart, or just use Linux for free.
as for mice, the big problems with the mighty mouse come from the fact that it looks cool but fails . I know you can put your finger a certain way and do all kinds of stuff, but blah. It aint that mighty.
not to mention the cords about 2 inches long. that is mighty!
-
They come with extension cables. But seriously, just get a real mouse. The only cool thing about the "Mighty Mouse" is the omni-directional scroll wheel.
-
well, I dont use them anymore.
I bought one thinking itd be nice.
I moved the mouse an inch and it unplugged from the USb port so I gave up.
I use a krait razor.
it glows orange. It is far mightier
-
I don't like things that glow and distract me from the porn on the monitor. My mouse has kind of a red glow due to the optics, though. My PC case doesn't glow, but my power supply does. So gay.
-

my computer is bright yellow with rainbow fans.
5 of them.

That's me - 200% serious, 400% of the time. :-"
I just checked the Apple store and the top graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, not NVidia GT120.
But you can get up to four GT120s, which I'd guess would be capable of outrunning a single 4870. Unless of course Macs aren't SLI capable, which would make them even less 'pro'.
All the joy of porn surfing without the worry of trojans or worms.
I hope you're joking, as being less of a target does not equal being impervious to attack.

And as the Apple market share begins to rise, so will the instances of viruses. Virus writers just haven't been interested in discovering the vulnerabilities of the Mac OS, since not many people owned Macs. The Mac OS isn't inherently impervious to malware, and if/when I ever buy a Mac I will be running it with an antivirus program. I've even heard about iPods that have been known to get malware from iTunes. Nothing is safe. I'd run an antivirus on Linux.
And besides, there are tons of free pr0n sites that don't have malware.
-
Yeah, the market isn't quite big enough for the people who make anti-virus software to spend time coming up with mac-specific viruses just yet. Maybe soon, but ya never know.
-

Exactly. I've seen Mac's brought down by viruses; It's not pretty. I fixed a G4 that was completely taken out by malware.
The last time Avast's Linux edition had an update was 2007, when like the 78th virus was added. You don't even really need it but can install it if you want to be l33T.
I will always recommend using Linux for bittorrent. Relatively Safe. Much safer than a Mac.
-
The problem with bittorrents is if, say, you are illegally downloading software for Windows, you'd need Windows to install it. Can virus check programs check uninstalled data to see if it would install malware? I'd definitely pirate anti-virus programs because I have a hunch that they have a hand in creating many of the viruses in the first place. It's their bread and butter, after all.

speak of the devil today
i was at some gay coffee shop i was invited to
i pulled out my laptop (499$ HP)
sure enough some scenester newblit was like LUL DOES YOU PLAY WERLD OF WARCARFT?
im like yeah sometimes
hes like 'YOU SHOUD TRY IT ON MAC, IT RUNS BETER"
im like "it runs on fully maxed settings on this laptop and cost less than your laptop you got goin right there . I couldve bought id say about 5 laptops compared to your one piece of poo"
hes like "IM RUNNING IT ON FULL SETTIGS TOO"
i says to him : "Show me" he opens settings
apparently, full settings to him means having full screen mode on in 1024x768.
he turned shadow detail up and made the rest bigger and the game ran like it was having a seizure.
I waved him away and said "My point exactly. Go away now before your stupidity leaks out of your ear and onto my cookies"
then I got on Ultima Online because I prefer real games.
:-D

Holy crap on a cracker! You still play that game!? That's f*cking awesome! I haven't played UO since 99'. Good times.
Anyways, I find the expensiveness of mac hardware no matter what it is utterly rediculous. I just bought a old laptop to just mess around on and use as a MAME machine. I have it hooked up to my standard TV. MAME looks really pretty on it with those scanlines! =D I bought my laptop for 80 bucks! It's a 3ghz p4 Toshiba Satellite with 1gb of ram (just DDR though) and has a 128 meg NVidia GeforceFX card. It's old but does what I want it to do. Surf the net, do some light 3d work, play old games, and use as an olschool emulation machine. I have yet to find a G3 laptop for mac that costs less than 200 bucks that "works" or even comes close to the specs I have for the price I got. It's Macs viral marketing and mainstreaming from making iPods that keeps the value of their old G3/G4 laptops up in price.
-
speak of the devil again. Someone called me up and said "my mac broke, do you know how to fix it?"
i said "well if you broke it Id say its fixed. Theres this nice sale at best buy on HP and Sony laptops"
though I ended up going over, they managed to get their osx install to refuse to boot and just do some wannabe BSOD crap followed by the pinwheel of doom.
reinstalling osx is funny.
its a dent to the ego of any macfan.
"watch as your Mac heals from the thing which you said it would never do!"
-
Bias much?
-
Bias much?
I wouldn't say he's any worse than Apple's marketing or the zealots that eat that shit up.
-
Theres this nice sale at best buy on HP and Sony laptops"
I'm gonna have to disagree on Sony Vaio's. I have had 4 personally over the years; all have had motherboard failures. The HP pavillion is an ok machine, but the usb ports/power plugs are flimsy. You will end up replacing them after a year or two.
-
I bought my wife a Sony Vaio about two years ago for Xmas. It still runs like a champ and seems like it's brand new. I am however going to renew her warranty on it when it's up this December. You never know with computers. Especially those Macs. :P
-
No, but two zealots don't make a, ummm, yeah.
-
My video audio integrated operation is still kicking after 5-years. No problems with any hardware either. I don't think it really matters what brand your computer is since they're not the ones making the parts. The only thing sony about a vaio is the tower(atx case) and/or disc drive. If you open a Macbook, you will see toshiba parts. So ya; my few cents. lol.
-
Im not bias. There literally was a sale on HP and Sonys! I bought an HP laptop. My friend with a macbook that he bought a bit after I got a macbook looked at my HP, then looked at his Mac (which had a battery replacement in <2 yrs, and has a cracking case), then looked back at my HP and went "was that thing less than 1200$"
I said "Yep. Could get 2 for less than 1200" he says "more than 1gb ram, and 100gb hd?"
I said "3gb, and 500gb hd".
he said "f*ck"
Then I fired up FFXI since i was still playing it at the time and he goes "are you trying to make me kill myself or is that an innocent side effect to your superior computer"
my old ass pavilion (2 different ones) never had any port problems.. some people get unlucky I guess.
my buddys sony has been kicking for 4 years and hes a complete slob and spills/drops everything you can think of... :-D it survived an orange juice spill.
mac hardware has its flaws too, and I still think they are way too damn overpriced. Couple that with their elitist commercials, and its just a big goofy mess.
-
While I don't like the elitist commercials, if it sells, it sells. It's not a mess. I don't think Mac hardware is any more or less reliable than most other stuff out there. Most people I know who use Macs don't seem to have hardware issues. But then again, same thing goes with people I know who own Windows stuff. I guess I just know high quality people. ;)

I think Mac makes bullshit laptops to be honest.
Their home-models are great but those laptops are pieces of shit with a glowy apple slapped on them
-
The glowing apple is amazingly gay. If I had a Mac laptop (Which I wouldn't because I am not a fan of laptops in general)< I'd put some electrical tape over that POS.

one time on an OLD laptop i used to drag around, some nimrod was all up on his glowy apple elitism so I said I could do that too on this laptop.
I went home and used a exacto knife, and some clear tape and came in the next day with a glowy apple , rofl.
we blew that laptop up last 4th of july. What a show.
