Title: Dragon's Crown...2D brawling goodness
Post by: ParanoiaDragon on June 09, 2011, 11:27:42 AM
Wasn't sure how to word the topic of this, but, I was looking at pics & video's of Dragon's Crown by VanillaWare, & it looks sweet! I suppose this is a reason to get either a PS3(if you don't have one yet) or a PSV.

LOL
...but I think it looks pretty good. Although I prefer when games let you choose the gender of your class. I refuse to use a woman in a video game.

So you don't play Valis games?
I have been a huge fan of Princess Crown and Muramasa the Demon Blade. Great games. I really hope though that there is more frames of in-between animation added. The characters and enemies look way to cardboard cut out. It does look like a fun beat em up which is highly lacking these days. Reminds me a bit of Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons beat em up games.

I know i 'enjoy muramasa the demon blade and odin sphere highly. So yeah the, character size and shape for dragon's crown seem way off such as the head not matching it's body correctly.Still i'm not bother by how much the characaters look in drgaon's crown, even though i find it odd.
So let's here.
2d animation check !! Multiplayer check !! Gameplay suposely similar to capcom d&d check !!
Seems like a win,win to me from vanillaware.

Glad to see you are on my side Sunteam, a reference to the manliet game ever was great support.
Though, I should've clarified, I don't like using women in RPGs where the story revolves around the world and not your character. For example, in Diablo 1, couldn't pick the archer. However a game like Final Fantasy XIII I could sort of get into, because I was not role playing, but rather witnessing a role being played. Women characters in a game like Cotton are okay as well.
Any time I have to feel as though I am the character, and it is a woman, it doesn't work. I will never know what it is to have motherly instinct, thus I can't relate.

There's always a lot of discussion on MMORPG forums about men playing women/women playing men etc. I think the answer is that some people are fine with it, some are not. That's just how things are. The End.

In fact, I don't give a shit about. As long the character I'm playing with does appeal to me, there is nothing wrong with it.
I mean, there're peeps out there playing with hedgehogs and stuff, c'mon!!! *kiddn^.^*

It's funny you say that, cuz I think I read somewhere that the director George Kamitani was actually somehow involved in the Capcom D&D game!

yeah some people are just not very secure with their masculinity. Playing games like Valis or Fasuette Amour or Wonder Momo......Sailormoon games even......doesn't make you any less of a man.....or more of a woman hehe

I play as girls in a lot of games. They fit my play style.
In alot of beat em ups, the girl is quick. Or fighters, Chun Li is quick. Ryu is slow. Kasumi is fast, all the dudes are slow (except Ryu). I like moving around quickly. I could never be the Warrior in Gauntlet. I was the elf. If he had been a chick it wouldn't have impacted my decision. If the warrior was a chick, it still wouldn't.
Other games only have girls! Like Fausette, Steal Princess, Izumi... it doesn't stop me from playing them. I don't mind. As long as the games ok. I don't care.
Ive got chicks on MMOs. I have dudes also, but its nice to have variety instead of big burly dude 100% of the time.
Admittedly, I have a cat on FF14. If there was a male gender for them, I definitely would have been male though. Sucks theres ONLY females.
Now back to the game here, I think its realistic actually.
If a chick with tits that big in real life was running around in that silky dress, her tits would be all the f*ck over the place just like that. I had gym in high school, I saw all the big breasted girls getting wacked in the chin during basketball by their own rack. And that was in a tshirt!

I don't give two squirts what gender character I control in a video game. Chun-Li is easy on the eyes, E. Honda is not, Ryu looks cool. Stopping to think about it much more than that is kind of weird and might indicate the need for some personal reflection.
As far as the Dragon's Crown art, I agree with Zeta. It's overly fetishized. IMO, fetishized to the point of being stupid, bad art. Everything from the sorceress' boobs to the dwarf's shoulders have been exaggerated to the point of caricature. Personally, I like a little more realism and/or room left to the imagination in my fantasy characters. I'll take 1970's D+D art with its dumb bell-bottoms over new-school, half-demon/drow elves with septum piercings and over-sized, serrated, two-handed swords any day.

I prefer playing games as female characters. But I don't consider them an avatar of myself in real life. It's just a game.
I also don't mind watching films or shows with female leads.

If people are really worrying about how the character design looks, then that's their problem. It doesn't make a game bad when it's your own personal opinion. I don't see too many people really worrying about the character art style that much. I think the game looks freaking fantastic. Vanillaware has always had the same character artist all the way before it was Vanillaware doing Princess Crown. I think the game is going to be a nice beat em up that is severely lacking in this day and age. People are making to big a deal about it when no one has even played it. Looks like it will be fun to me. It is a beat em up though and could get monotonous like quite a few. Hopefully there will be enough gameplay to break up the monotony that a beat em up usually has.

Go on...... :P
Let's say "senior year" gym class, so that way it is less creepy.
Go on.......
haha I had a similar experience except I was in the 6th grade. One day this girl came to school wearing a muscle shirt (you know like a regular over sized tee with the sleeves cut off) and she was not wearing a bra or anything for that matter underneath so everything were hanging out and out in the open. Come to think of it I am surprised my teacher didn't send her home for that! hehe

I have no problem with how it plays. Using the Sorceress or Wizard I kinda question decisions for how you cast magic, but otherwise it plays just like Princess Crown. I have been enjoying the game immensely. I might even get it later for PS3 so I can play it on a nice larger screen. It does get kinda hard to see at some points on the Vita when the camera zooms out.

Well, here's my list of "WTFs"
1) The pacing sucks. It's somehow less smooth than Princess Crown because you have to tell the thief dipshit to go grab things and open stuff. 2) The right thumbstick moves a cursor to click stuff. Why. This isn't a Wii game. 3) Using the thumbstick to move your character is awful. 4) Dash + Attack are the same button 5) The archer misses shots with her arrow while getting punched. That's cute. 6) The elf runs out of arrows, and then they mysteriously drop off of stuff you hit. This makes boss battles about the dumbest thing ever with the Elf. You unload from across the screen, dash attack to the other side. Gather all the arrows, repeat.
The presentation is nice though.
Title: Re: Dragon's Crown...2D brawling goodness
Post by: geise on August 08, 2013, 06:25:44 AM
I'm a little more forgiving, but yeah telling the thief to open doors and treasure chests is kind of unnecessary. It's easy on Vita with the touch screen, but man it seems like it would be annoying on the PS3 version. If you want to use the D-Pad to control you character just change it in the options. I started with the analogue and switched it. Seems better now.

Post by: Arkhan on August 08, 2013, 07:08:49 AM
Yeah but then you're stuck navigating the piss poor item menu with the thumbstick.
Why you can't use L/R for that is beyond me.
also, why your gear shows up is beyond me. You cant use it in battle. Youre f*cking wearing it and swinging it around with the square button.

^ the gripes you have with the game Arkhan seem to be little annoyances. The game is not perfect, but i also don't think its ass either. I do see where you are coming from with the thief, but this game was developed for the vita first, and thats why its in the ps3 version. It would be nice if they had an option to just allow the thief to open shit, but sometimes that can be bad because some chest are bobby trapped.
If people are still on the fence i suggest watching this very in depth review of the game

Unless its a serious departure from previous games the graphics will be beautiful but the level design nonexistent and the pacing a sophocating slog.
Yeap. That's about right.
Even my girlfriend, who doesn't play beat-em-ups to reference it with said "This game's really dumb. Everything is just a pretty looking jumbled up mess. Why did you buy this."
Then I put the D&D game in for Saturn and she went "This is way older but less retarded. How'd that happen."

Classics never "age."
That's capcom's beat 'em up at its best. Well at least arcade wise, I've never played the Saturn version. The only thing better would have been a CPS3 version with maybe a few minor additions to the play mechanics. Maybe.
Sounds like this game, for me, can wait a few months.

yeah. It's not a good game. Alot of dipf*cks on the internet are raving about how good it is, and they've probably never played the D&D beat em offs or anything, so they have skewed perceptions of what's a good fantasy RPGish beat em up.
The game has garbage pacing, obvious triggers for enemies, incoherent messes of boss battles, and a bunch of big jiggly tits.

This game was originally created for Vita, and then was decided to make a ps3 port with the Vita mechanics. Problem is a couple things with the "gameplay" use the touchscreen. So for ps3 owners they have to use the R analogue for moving around and clicking on shit. It really makes the pace of the game terrible, and I see where Ark is coming from. However the game certainly is not complete shit, f*cking blows, is retarded (which shouldn't be used since the definition doesn't mean "dumb") it's just certain bad choices for some game mechanics. Some things like opening treasure chests should have just been done with walking up to them. If you always have someone with you to open doors then what's the point. If it's always available to you to go and open anything than just let the main character do it. The game sure has it's faults, but being a Princess Crown fan I really like it. I also don't compare it to Capcom's D&D and certainly don't know why it's being compared to an arcade game.

The Vita release doesn't seem all that well optimized though. It suffers from slowdown that's nowhere present in the console release, the touch screen is a nice trade off.
I don't own it but I have to say it looks pretty damn good to me. I saw the FGC stream some multiplayer and the combat looked like it had a lot of depth to it for a beat em' up. Like the above I am also a Princess Crown fan and know what I'm getting into as far as repetition goes.
For me though I have to say this is probably the least attractive art style I have seen Vanillaware use. I don't really like the western influence on all the characters, the Amazon is just an eyesore in particular. Princess Crown, Odin Sphere, and Muramasa were all much better looking games.

It's still not a sit down and play through once arcade game.
Neither is the D&D arcade game, necessarily. To could save your progress and resume it later by entering your initials.
Guardian Heroes is a better example of a beat-em-up that usually isn't finished in one sitting. It's also really great, much better than D&D and way WAY better than Odin Sphere. That thing is torture.

So far I'm really enjoying this game. I guess I just like shitty games that aren't even worth powering up? The thief-to-unlock-doors-and-chests is kind of dumb, though. But it's a very minor complaint. It's not as action packed as D&D but it instead feels like a less clunky Princess Crown.

Ditto i'm enjoying the game so far as well.Just be warn, during multiplayer with so much action going on it can be easy to get lost.

Nearly every boss battle is an incoherent mess of shit going everywhere.
It's like a bullet hell game, except not fun.

At least the spell casting doesn't the slow action down. That's one thing, that annoyed me in D&D SOM all that spamming for spells and you couldn't get a hit in.
