Title: TG-16 Manual Scans
Post by: Bernie on March 08, 2012, 12:31:39 PM
Updated with my DropBox link to my manual scans.  This is everything on one compressed file.  Not sure what is going on with estes site.   :-k

https://www.dropbox.com/s/72q0zkhcakd4erd/Manuals.rar?dl=0

Had a few requests to scan certain manuals, so I decided to start posting the links here to my scans.  All manual scans are done at 400dpi and saved in pdf format.  I also include raw scans on most of the manuals.  Requests are welcome, and if I have the game I will get it up ASAP.  Keep in mind, I am not taking the staples out, so the manuals do not lay perfectly flat.  This will mainly be noticed in thick manuals, like Sim Earth.  It doesnt look bad, just you can tell.

very cool of ya Bernie!
if you guys are printing this stuff out yourselves make sure you do not cheap out on stock, get a very bright white sheet and look for a 28lb stock and you will be a lot happier with the results.

Our very own lkermel  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Also, I would love to throw a page together that has all the TG-16/PCE manuals you folks scan (a convenient place for them).

Just a thought.

Thanks esteban.  :)  I've been in touch with him, and he is getting a list together for me.  Far as getting a page together to host them, I dont care.  The more the merrier.  I will keep updating this thread as I scan manuals and upload them to my hotfile account.  Just grab em from there.

Yes, I agree: the more the merrier. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Since some manuals (and sites!) disappear over time, I want to host as much as I can.

REQUEST: I would like to host the highest-quality scans available, so if you could make SUPER DELUXE scans, I would be incredibly grateful. I'm going to throw a page together in the next few days to get things started (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Thanks again!

Ok, been in contact with Kermel, and he gave me a list of what he wanted for now.  I will update this thread with the uploads as well for others and you esteban.  Going to change my scanning a little bit, to have a better quality scan.

esteban, did you grab the four I have here already?  I can email them to you if you like.  Unless you are a premium member, Hotfile limits how much you can download in a 30 minute period.  Not too big of a pain, but playing catch up when there are more than a couple files can take some time that way.

I just downloaded Vasteel and BAM! I hit the quota (as you indicated) and have to wait 30 minutes.

So, yes, please email the files.

You are kickin' ass. I had to scramble today to catch up (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

OK, it took me longer than I expected, but I added all of the instruction manuals you uploaded:

TurboGrafx-16 Instruction Manuals (you can sort/re-sort the table) (http://archives.tg-16.com/magazine_database.htm?col=pub&val=i)

I still need to tweak the entries (I'm not 100% happy with how I worded/formatted everything).

If things work out, we can add hardware instruction manuals, too (hey, we can dream!). (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

A lot of times opening a PDF file and printing it results in it scaling to fit in the page.
There should be a preview or page set up so you can make sure your printing it at 100% and make sure you print it horizontal :)

I will open one of these at work on Monday and offer better advise on printing so you get the best results :) I am sure others have printed these just fine but if no one else chimes in I will let you know.

So, who has the Magical Chase manual?
Or, who can tell me how to work the magic spells and what they do?  Also the stuff for sale in the shops - what do they do?
I just got a PC Engine copy, and I'm confused.

i printed directly from the pdf file of Adam Family from Acrobat and made sure to print landscape/horizontal and it printed out so damn close to size i would not worry about it. :)
again make sure you DO NOT scale to fit, print it as is!!! :)

Ya that is the tricky part... Try printing the first page then flip it upside down and print the second page but lining up is a bitch at times.

i printed directly from the pdf file of Adam Family from Acrobat and made sure to print landscape/horizontal and it printed out so damn close to size i would not worry about it. :)
again make sure you DO NOT scale to fit, print it as is!!! :)

How would you set it where you could print front and back?

Inspired by your scans, I set out to create a PDF that would print a manual with the pages in the correct order and double sided as well.  I found that a good way to do it is to take the staples out of the manual and scan each leaf separately, rename the scans in the order the sheets go together, and then create a PDF (using ImageMagick) from the JPGs. To print, I selected "Auto-Rotate and Center" on the print options, and under the printer's setup, chose "Duplex" (or 2 sided), with the short side (stapling left) option on - otherwise, the back side of each leaf will be printed upside down.

Awesome. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

I know this is crazy, but if you (and others) created specialized files for printing reproductions, I would add them to the Archives. It would truly be a labor of love to create these .pdf's. Also, I wouldn't want unscrupulous ebay sellers to pass these off as originals. But, I suppose that comes with the territory. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)

Sorry Bernie I'm not trying to thread jack but figured this the best place to post this request.. Can someone scan the front of their Neutopia II manual? I just want a slip sheet insert for my case since I don't have the manual (the one in the original post appears to have a bright spot) and I wanted a nice print out

Thanks again for this thread Bernie, some great scans!!

No matter what I try I cannot get any of the manuals to print the correct size. Maybe it's because I am using windows 7? When I go to print in adobe reader I make sure that no scaling is turned on and that select paper by PDF size is selected. When I print this way the manual comes out slightly too small. Maybe only by a few mm.

Whew, never mind. I finally figured out a way to do this with Nero 8 cover program instead.

esteban, the links in post #1 are no longer working.  Something about the website being down.  I'm not sure how long it's been like this.

For anyone wanting to print the Soldier Blade manual, you'll notice the front and back cover are separated in the .pdf making it difficult to print.  I went ahead and combined them.  I don't have an Adobe account so I could not reassemble them with the original .pdf created by Necro.  This at least gives you an option for printing.

I checked out the manual archive, and noticed a couple things that bugged me.

According to the URL, the Final Lap Twin manual was credited to Bernie and not me. All the other manuals that I contributed are credited correctly.

Also, Ys 3 was NOT Ys 4 in Japan. (this isn't Final Fantasy, Esteban)

The next manual I will be scanning is the last one I originally promised, Lords of the Rising Sun. If I get any new games that have manuals yet to be scanned, I'll definitely scan them, of course. :)

Is there still not a proper scan for the entirety of the Mergical Chersu booklet?

You'd think someone by now would have the testicular fortitude enough to take one for the team and gently remove the staples and get that shit going already.

Hey, Mossman guy thing, how about you?

+1 Great resource, I've been using these to keep my originals from wearing out or getting damaged, as well as games I don't have the manuals for.

Here are some scanning tips I use on my cover project stuff that may help out.
1-Put black paper behind the manual pages, this helps reduce images and text from the other side to show through. Also helps reduce glare around the sides if the black paper is bigger than the page. (I got some black paper at an art supply store)
2-Put something flat on top of the page with a 2.5 pound weight on it for better/flatter compression, some scanner lids don't do a very good job.
3-Descreen scanner option should help on these if your not using it already.

Esteban, why isn't the last manual I sent you in the database yet? You're not getting lazy like me, are you? :P

Also, I'll try to finish up the next manual I've been working on soon. I know it's been a while since I promised it, but it's still in my mind.

Hey Bernie thanks for the manuals..  I'm wondering if I can take these to let's say kinkos or staples and get the actual manual printed and cut just like the original manual in glossy paper..  Has anyone tried that ?

Some folks here have.  I sure someone here can give you some pointers on how to get it done.  I didn't do this with that in mind, so I am not sure really.  Also, I didn't remove the staples, so some of the thicker manual scans will be kinda outta wack.

The pages will fit on a normal sheet of paper.  You will need an oversized stapler to staple them though.

Ok but does it work with the front and back images so that you can cut the paper and run the staples thought the middle ?

You'll have to reorder the sheets for that to work, but it can be done.

Yep, you will have to reorder the pages to have it come out correctly.  I use Publisher to reorder the pages and to get them the right size and I have an extra deep stapler to staple them all together.

This is for any manual, PCE or TG-16, that you'd like to scan.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Ask if you have specific scanning questions...I can create a .pdf from your raw scans (if necessary).

I'd like to archive high-quality scans (.tif), plus make .pdf...

Ha!

First, I love seeing all your recent posts :) good to see you back.

On a single day (December 1, I think), I had 15,000+ downloads (or, attempted downloads) of Ys IV .rar soundtrack.

Needless to say, my budget hosting service immediately balked at 2.7 terabytes of downloads and I was scolded. Site taken offline.

What is sad is that I attempted to resolve the issue several times, but waiting for "customer service" proved to be a trial itself.

I tried to determine if the traffic was genuine (15,000 unique users) or if it was some script/service that went awry...I haven't figured it out yet.

I have a hard time believing that 15,000 real humans were interested in Ys IV PCE soundtrack...but who knows?

Are there manual scans for Gunboat, Hit the Ice, Impossamole, and/or Yo Bro floating around anywhere?

I too could use a hit the ice manual scan.

on another note here is the link to a u.s. Time Cruise manual that tbone3969 was so helpful to scan for me.https://www.dropbox.com/sh/708n90ngffe4f0j/AABigcm-RBoE3yBMXUwA1FfSa?dl=0

I have Hit the Ice and the others, I think I just gotta scan them.

If you tell me what you want, I'll scan them in the next day or three.

:)

Here's a scan for the map that came with Y's if anyone needs it in the future. Just scanned it for a friend, here's the link:

If there is still a need for this, I can upload all the manuals in one archive for folks.

 This is great! Thanks, everyone, for doing this.

What is the best way to print these? Inkjet? Laserjet? Have a store like Office Depot print them?

I'm also in the market for a better printer. What brands do you folks recommend?

Thank!  :)

Speaking of printing covers, I enjoy dabbling in customizing covers. Been looking for video game fonts. All I've found are fonts for ATARI and even they are not perfect.

I actually have UPS or FedEx/Kinkos print stuff for me.  I bring in my own paper that kind of matches what I'm looking for and they normally charge half price for color prints then.  Haven't done a manual (normally just case inserts for loose Vita stuff) but I'd think it would work well.

Oh, and if you want to print the PDFs from Bernie you'll probably have to move/crop the pages to make it line up correctly for when you do a double-sided print.  I really recommend the cover project if you've never checked it out before.
