Interesting. I updated Netflix for Wii the other day (I think this was the first update since it changed from a disc to a download) and its basically identical except for:

There are new fonts, they are uglier.

The language/subtitle button is now very ugly.

Everything from browsing to scanning through the movie is now stuttery and stupid.

So basically it just got worse. Actual movie playback is fine, but WTF? I watch a lot of Netflix on OSX, iPhone, PS3, and Wii and the Wii version has always been by favorite of the different interfaces. I guess it still is, but its not as smooth now.

I've been saying "NO" to that Wii Netflix update for a few days now. Perhaps I'll just keep on saying it until it forces it.

I think Skyward Sword auto-installs Netflix.

I stopped my netflix membership back in July.. have they added any good stuff since then? I was at the point where I was hard pressed to find a good movie/tv show to watch that I had not already seen

Right now I'm using it to run through the episodes of various Star Trek series, namely Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. I missed the last three or four seasons of DS9 when it was in its initial run in the 90s, and I discontinued my cable service a couple episodes into the 2nd season of Enterprise during its initial run in the early '00s. To have this stuff on demand, without having to wait for a physical disc to show up in the mail is really pretty cool.

I'm halfway through season 3 of Enterprise right now... It has gotten surprisingly good. I can't remember the last time I had a TV show that inspired this much desire to "see what happens next." The first two seasons were really, really hit and miss and shared more in common with the worst of Voyager than the best of Trek. There was some excellent stuff here and there, but those episodes were the exception rather than the rule. If this trend continues through the end of season 4, I'll have to question the studio's decision to cancel. Perhaps they just lost too many viewers during seasons 1 and 2 and were never able to recover.

Interesting. I'm re-watching Next Generation right now. The cost of this series on DVD is more than a year of Netflix, so the service is more than worth it for me. This is just one of many series I've watched.

I rewatched all of Next Generation, a few episodes of Enterprise and Voyager, but I have seen them all before.  The only series I haven't seen each episode of is Deep Space 9 which wasn't on Netflix for whatever reason.  If it is now, I'll have to check it out.

Exactly. It's already paid for itself a dozen times in the amount I've watched so far.

Before I started in on DS9 and Enterprise, I watched a handful of TNG episodes from the later seasons that I don't own on DVD (I've only got 1-3 on DVD). TNG and the originals are the only two Trek series I had seen, start to finish. Some of that stuff I hadn't seen since it's original TV run, however, and a bit of it hasn't aged very well, I'm sad to say. One of the biggest things I noticed is how bad a lot of the music got after they fired Ron Jones at the end of Season 4 or 5.

I rewatched all of Next Generation, a few episodes of Enterprise and Voyager, but I have seen them all before.  The only series I haven't seen each episode of is Deep Space 9 which wasn't on Netflix for whatever reason.  If it is now, I'll have to check it out.

It is. Even though I've seen the first three or four seasons, I'm still rewatching it all start to finish. Man, DS9 has aged really well by comparison to TNG. I stopped watching it during its original run because I got bored with it. I'm having the opposite reaction this time around. A decent number of the best characters in the Trek universe came from DS9.

Voyager, on the other hand... I watched the first season during its original run, and gave up on it. I remember hating Janeway, being annoyed by Tuvok and that awful hologramatic doctor, and unable to really forge a connection with any of the others. Maybe if I get really bored sometime down the line after I'm done with DS9 and Enterprise I'll give it another chance.

I basically never watched Enterprise. I'm looking forward to giving it a chance. I'll probably give Voyager another chance too, although I did not like the show originally any more than the next guy.

Next Gen is one of my favorite shows of all time. I don't love everything about it (Where are the other 990 people on this ship? Why are all admirals douchebags?, WTF is with Troi's accent?) but it has some extremely good storylines. Easily the most intellectual show to debut as first run syndication. Shaka, when the Walls Fell. Warp speed limits. Inner Light. This is some amazing shit here.

DS9 though....gah, I f*cking hate that show. I can't say I've really watched all that much of it, but I gave up when I realized it was the most racist thing I've ever seen. Its a racist's dream in the sense that they had to invent all new, non-human, races that were, according to the plot, the most genuine racist characters ever. Why invent characters when you can invent entire species who's behavior can be accurately judged just be seeing the starship they are traveling in?

To be fair, this shit really began on Next Gen, but it was rarely the purpose of an episode, or a full season plot arc for that matter.

All shape shifters cannot be trusted.

All Klingons are basically animals (how the f*ck did they ever invent warp drive, or even the wheel for that matter?)

All Cardassians are basically evil as shit.

All Ferengi are basically a Nazi propaganda cartoon's depiction of a Jew. This one gets me the most. Its...extremely grotesque. An entire race where every single one of them is a greedy, thieving, amoral liar. How convenient for the writers.

And humans? Well humans are just "normal", of course. Some are violent, some are thieves, some have extreme hatred for other species, but it is rare. Everyone is different and within "normal" parameters, which is exactly how short-sited racist people see themselves in the universe. Meanwhile you can pretty much make a color wheel sort of thing showing which races hate which other races. Its ridiculously simplistic and lazy on the part of the producers. I mean, its one thing when you are doing this sort of thing in Lord of the Rings, where individual character development takes a back seat to massive world changing concepts and wars in a non-enlightented society with evil wizards and shit, but on DS9...I can't understand why Captain Sisko doesn't have a boombox that launches photon spears.

Then you take all these racist characterizations and bitchy ER-esque dialogue and cram them into the same smelly space station and watch them fight. Congratulations, you've made Star Trek dystopian! Next Gen was all about cosmic phenomenon, robot rights, alternate realities, god, etc. DS9 is about money and revenge. What a bummer.

As far as Voyager goes, my most loathed character was Neelix.  He was completely unnecessary and annoying.  I also felt that a lot of characters were miscast, especially Janeway.  She must smoke a lot.

Don't give up on it if the first two seasons put you off. For me, it doesn't really hit its stride until 3. That said, don't expect another TNG. It's.... different. Less refined, raw, grittier.

One of my favorite episodes of TNG is the second season episode, Q Who. The one where the Federation first encounters the Borg. There is something legitimately terrifying about the portrayal of the Borg in that episode, something that was lost as the years went on (especially with the movie "First Contact").

It never struck me as racist as you make it out to be, but I can certainly see your point. At this time I don't have a great deal to back up an argument against your standpoint, but I'll be considering it as I continue through the episodes.

Ha, it's interesting you mention this one as I always thought the portrayal of Ferengi in DS9 was rather amusing. Did you ever watch far enough to see the Grand Nagus? I mean, come on. It's hard to take any of it seriously, and even harder to believe that the writers could have taken it seriously either.

As far as Voyager goes, my most loathed character was Neelix.  He was completely unnecessary and annoying.  I also felt that a lot of characters were miscast, especially Janeway.  She must smoke a lot.

Oh man, I totally forgot about Neelix. You're right, he totally beats out that awful doctor in the annoying department.

Funny you mention Janeway being miscast, I remember reading way back when the show first aired that she was a distant second choice for the role. As a matter of fact, they filmed the entire pilot with someone else playing Janeway but before the series aired she decided she didn't want to commit to an entire series or something along those lines so they fired her and refilmed all the Janeway scenes with the "real" Janeway.

I just remembered one other thing about Voyager. The most interesting character on the show, some alien named Kes, they got rid of very early on for no apparent reason. I guess she didn't want to commit to a series either, who knows. Either way, that was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back for me, I stopped watching around that time.
