Super Bonk on SNES
« on: April 10, 2012, 05:40:53 AM »

Ok, so I was curious.  I bought Super Bonk 1 and 2 for the SNES, and got the first one today in the mail.  My first impressions, are it resembles the Turbo versions very closely..  But then the music, omg the terrible terrible music...  What in the hell?  I havent played too far into it, but I am watching my 17 year old daughter play it as I type.  As far as fun factor goes, I think I can get into it.  But, as far as the music and the sound effects.....  Really, what the fudge were they thinking??!!  Its like they tried to cartoon it up a little too much in the sound dept... if that makes any sense....  Anyone else have any thoughts on this game?  I'd love to see what others thought/felt about these two Bonk games.

Super Bonk was not a bad a game at all, being a bonk game.
However what I dislike is the constant shading of everything as the SNES bounces along into 2003. They went from SNES original graphics to
comic book, beautiful animated graphics, alongside 3d realistic graphics.

Somewhere the SNES just went too far.

.........................
Take Megaman.

MM7 had original SNES graphics.

MMX-3 had slightly smaller graphics, that tried to be realistic ( I do not know since the only measurement where the light capsules ). However the game never really changed at all from the PSX/Saturn asides for the detail.

Rockman and Forte finally had picture perfect graphics, right after MM strolled down Saturn/Playstation street. I am trying to scratch my head on that one. The graphics of Rockman & Dash were far more superior to the Saturn/PSX games. They pretty much proved they did not need the PSX or Saturn for the rockman games.
.................

Castlevania is another good example.

CV4 had the usually SNES graphics, with extra shading, and extra everything. It was truly Super.

CV5 as we all know was an alternative to the PCE game. Dracula and everything else fights and looks a little bit differnt. The sprites are the same but less. However this is beautiful, with hand drawn likeness.

CVPSX again tries to out do the PCE game but uses a whole lotta shading, asides for 3d effects. Basically ripped off the PCE game, but added 3d improvements, and storylines that are thrown out the window.
Leaving us with a cliff hanger for another videogame that never occur.
................................................................................................

However the original PCE games are basically filled with prodigy material
from various ficitronal references. References that nobody will ever remember, from various comic books, and media. The SNES was just Hudson Soft hanging on to their balls as they continue the ride down Nintendo street. If Hudson Soft could only predict the future we would probably have a fifth bonk game for the PCE by now. The only thing we got out of it was Bomberman N64.

...............

Anybody also notice the constant usage of the arror signs??? That kinda bothered me, alot. The original bonk had some inside of it, but this one makes them stick out like no tommorow.

Probably more then any Bonk game(well, except maybe the arcade one), this game needs a remake.  It's kinda boring thruout, & yeah, the music for the most part doesn't do it.  There are a few good songs, the slow space theme is cool, as is the factory theme(also used for that basketball mini game), but most songs are Bonkish, at all!  Some songs are downright horrible!  Also, the colors are wayyyy too drab, there's WAYYY too many bonus levels, Bonk maybe moves a lil too slow.  Could probably use a slghtly faster spin as well.  They also didn't do a very good job with the detail of the gfx.  There's alot of drab looking tiles in general that don't mesh with the more Bonkish stuff.  Look at the buildings in the far bg, they look terrible & un-Bonkish.  I also don't like most of the sounds.  Ofcoarse, Bonk 3 had already done away with the classic sounds, but a few of them were similar.  This one's sounds are...kinda all over the place.

Maybe someday, someone will pick this game up & rebuild it from scratch, & make it the game it should've been.

As for Super Bonk 2, it's pretty cool, deffinitly has the colors, & the sounds are more inline with the earlier Bonks.  I love most of the music, though I wish there were some more serious tunes beside all the wacky ones.  I don't like how they got rid of the system where, when Bonk dies, he starts up again right where he died.  That needs to be remedied, & maybe throw in a few more bonus levels.  I like that he can run.  I don't like that when he hits a ceiling, it kinda sticks to it for a split second.  It slows down the gameplay.

You should try the first 2 Gameboy Bonks, they're fairly decent, though, not without there flaws.  Bonk GB 1 is pretty much a retelling of the original Bonk.  Bonk GB 2 is a little different, it could've used some mini games instead of the 1 on 1 think with Cyber Bonk.  I'm not sure if I like the 3 abilities in it, I think they should've done more with them.

It's a shame that Kaneko & Hudson never brought the arcade Bonk to the Turbo, I guess there was some thought of doing that at one point.  However, the game just isn't suited for normal gaming.  It's more of a competition type game(in the arcade, you would win prizes).  It'd be cool to take the gfx & music, & make a new game out of it.  Maybe include stuff from the 3rd GB Bonk to use as bonus games.....not to mention, make it so Bonk can spin!!

I always felt that the pc genjin/bonk belongs to the pce only. Just as sonic belonged to sega and mario to nintendo stuff. Now today this is a completely different story, since sega retreated from the hardware marked and was forced to use his sonic on other platforms as well (even nowhere as good as on their original platforms).

The only difference back then was, that Hudson was on the one hand the father of the pce, but on the other hand also still developed a lot for other systems as well. And since the sfc (let alone the GB) just had much more potential users after being a certain time in the market than the pce had, it was obvious to release bonk games on other platforms as well.

Still in my inner I think they shouldn't done that.

Super Bonk really feels like a version of Bonk 3 with strange environments. I think it's about on par with Bonk 3, not a bad game. But certainly not as good as revenge.

Super Bonk 2 is completely different, Bonk has a number of transformations which give the game some interesting variety, he has a redrawn sprite, and the game has a map screen like Super Mario World. I played a lot of Super Bonk 2 and really did enjoy it, it changes up the Bonk formula which by the original Super Bonk was getting a bit stale.

Just on a side note, I also agree with those mentioning the GameBoy Bonks, they're not direct ports of the TG16 versions of Adventure and Revenge, but rather are unique games, and are worth checking out!
