Avoid Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.  It is an RPG on training wheels. Lots of hand holding, limited flexibility on where you go next so it's hard to get lost and confused, and too many obvious clue and info on what to do next. Plus I've defeated the final boss in as little as 2 rounds using cure spell. (only hero the main character's spell works, Phoebe's cure does not work)

I haven't played Mystic Quest since it was first released but I remember I quite enjoyed it.
Before playing it I'd read that it was a simple RPG/Final Fantasy game for younger players, so I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. There are much better RPGs on the SNES/SFC, but once you've played all the best ones, personally I'd recommend checking out Mystic Quest, just don't expect a deep game.

I rented FFMQ when it came out, and it felt like a cheap dumbed down phone game, even though they didn't technically exist yet. At the time, the best way I could describe it was "not a real game". Like it was devolved down to the point of being more of a demo or early version of a non-final game. I don't hate it, I just couldn't take it seriously back when it was current.

About the only thing decent about FFMQ was the music. Other than that, not even a weekend rental, more like a night rental.

I'm not gonna get into defending Mystic Quest as I don't have enough attachment or nostalgia with it as I do with many, many other SFC/SNES games.
But I stand by it's not as terrible a game as being made out. As long as you go into it expecting what it was designed to be, which is a simple RPG made for younger children, with that in mind it's an ok game. Just don't expect it to be like Final Fantasy IV or VI.

Yeah, I beat Mystic Quest, and it is what it was intended to be, a "starter" type RPG (like wilykat said, an RPG on training wheels) for a lower age group of game player (somewhere under 8-9 I guess). I thought this was understood from the packaging and what not.

It's Final Fantasy for Babbies.

I'm not really sure that's a good thing. I don't think I would have wanted to get into bad RPGs any earlier. I was just fine under 8-9 playing other video games that weren't aimed for kids.

Anyone play Zenki Battle Raiden? Unknown licensed game that is actually one of the best games on the system.

The moveset is pretty fantastic. Charged punches, a jump kick button, ki blasts, tornado uppercuts, and even a dash punch.

Level design is also pretty solid, excellent graphics and music, and the game is by the people that made Hagane.

Did you play Final Fantasy II? It was the EasyType version.

You know, although this is technically true, I never found the HardType to be any harder than the EasyType. Sure there are more potions now, and some minor things here or there. Tunnels are harder to find, but maybe because I played EasyType first, when I first played the HardType (translated ROM), I didn't find it hard, and I found that a lot of what they cut out made it not easier, but more streamlined. I almost never used the various magical attack items. In fact, end game, I sold them all. They were worthless. Same with Cecil's Darkness. Was cool to figure out why Cecil's twin uses it on Mt. Ordeals, but wasn't very useful.

I do consider it the definitive version, but it wasn't that difficult, and it wasn't like the EasyType was substantially weaker.

I think the biggest difference is managing the different status effects in HardType.

Lots of great rpgs for the system. Can't say I enjoyed much of any other genre on that system.

Yeah, that's a good list and why I loved the system. Some more I would add:
Wild Guns (surprisingly fun, glad I ran into imports like this thanks to emulation)

Wild Guns is one of the best rail shooters i've played.I had a friend make a repro of the game for me.Sure,it's not official but the price for a original isn't worth it to me.

I always get a little bit mad when I remember an expensive game that I used to play back in the day but sold for pennies. But yes, it is one of my favorite games for the system, too bad the price is nuts nowadays (god bless the Everdrive).
That is has though any game by natsume released for the snes is pricey now.Which is a shame to,they were one of the best 3rd party developers for the console.
