I'm not really sure that's a good thing. I don't think I would have wanted to get into bad RPGs any earlier. I was just fine under 8-9 playing other video games that weren't aimed for kids.

Did you play Final Fantasy II? It was the EasyType version.
Hate to say it, but Easytype or Hardtype are still pretty easy. Then again, it could be because I played the shit out of 2 when I was a lad.

So based on the recent discussion of Mystic Quest I decided to pick up a copy given that it goes for so cheap. I have never been able to get into RPG's so my thinking is maybe if I play something that was designed for newcomers to the genre maybe I can ease into it and eventually enjoy the many good games of this genre. Thoughts? Am I started with too simple/terrible of a game that I will be turned off for good?

It's true, I read the reason behind the game was it was designed to introduce westerners to JRPGs as they thought standard JRPGs would be too hard for their demographic and also make them accessible to younger players. I think they got this wrong, westerners were fine with the level of difficulty of standard JRPGs, but maybe they were right with the younger players bit.
So to answer your question I definitely don't think it would be a good game to start with. I would only advise checking it out if you have played all the other great RPGs on the SNES/SFC.

I was doing laps through AD&D Treasure of Tarmin (270'ish floors) when I was 6 or 7 years old. Long before I knew what a "RPG" was, had figured out that I loved them, or actually begun to seek them out.

Personally I think Super Mario RPG is a better choice if you're not used to playing that genre. It has some platforming, but it does a good job getting you used to RPGs. It was my first RPG.

SignofZeta: What a quintessentially PCEFX thread. Someone complains about nothing, multiple Bible-length posts discussing who's a bigger a$$hole follow. You're both pretty big a$$holes. Let's call it a tie.

Yeah good call, I'd agree with that, Super Mario RPG would be an ideal choice.

Great system can't really be knocked.
For good games to number of games ratio, the SNES is kind of a shit pile.  With that said even I like the system.

By that logic, the same goes for every popular game system, e.g. PlayStation, NES, Genesis, Xbox 360, Wii...

They tried to make me do a recap
I said no, no, no

I was always a fan of super punch out.  Cheap game like $20 loose and provides hours of fun.  Just hard enough to keep me coming back for more after I lost.  I eventually beat it and got so good that I could knock out The Bruisers in the first round every time.

Great game.

I enjoyed mystic quest on game boy. I think I was about 10 at the time. Never played mystic quest on snesss so I don't know if they have any relation at all.

FF Legend series on Gameboy = Romancing Sa-Ga series in Japan
FF Adventure on Gameboy = Seiken Densetsu (prequel to "Secret of Mana")

In Europe, FF Adventure was called Mystic Quest.

So you like Secret of Mana. :P
