Interesting.  Even though there's not much room for the pcb, I assume there's no issue with rom sizes nowadays, at least not if you stick to 8 megabit or less and don't need a mapper.

He even has plans for a mapper version. One of the biggest problems with this sort of stuff is most chips are made for 3.3V instead of 5V. The industry really only makes 5V stuff for legacy systems like these, so finding parts becomes harder. The mapper version would include an FPGA that does both the mapper stuff and voltage translation, because finding an appropriate sized 5V chip at that size is near impossible.
