Playstation recommendations
« on: January 06, 2008, 04:10:32 PM »
I've never really been terribly interested in any of Sony's consoles and certainly have never owned one before. Now however I find myself in possession of a virtually brand-new final run (PSone) deck. How did this come to be, you ask? Well, yesterday was my birthday and one of my buddies, knowing me as the video gaming fanatic that I am, thought it would be good for me to add a Playstation to my collection. He apparently bought it a few years ago brand new, then bought a PS2 almost immediately after so he only used the PSone a couple of times. It's been in his closet ever since.

So anyway, now that I've got it, I might as well get some games for it.

I'm not interested in any of the 3D titles, as those early first-gen polygon graphics make me nauseous. So let's keep recommendations limited to 2D games.

So far my list consists of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. That's it. That's all I know I must have at this point. So let's help me flesh out this list a little bit with some must-own 2D Playstations titles, OK?

Hell yeah, Strikers 1945 is awesome, I've played that one in the arcade before.

And I plan on getting a swap disc, so imports are fair game too.

Tomba 1 and 2, and Klonoa.  Tomba 2 and Klonoa do have polygons, but they're 2.5D games and they look really nice.  Incredible games, equal to or better than the best 16bit platformers.

Damn, yeah, Tomba 1 especially looks awesome. 2 doesn't look too bad either, I might be able to stomach the limited polygon usage.

You'll be doing yourself a SERIOUS misfavor by skipping over the original Metal Gear Solid. [-(

Naw, I'll survive, that genre doesn't do anything for me. Not interested.

I reccomend Final Fantasy 9 then. It's as awesome as a SNES RPG, and the only 3D is the overworld and the characters, everything else is pre-rendered.

Most of the time if a 2D game was also on Saturn, then the PS version sucks. The only exceptions to this I know of are In the Hunt and certain versions of Street Fighter II (Super and Super Turbo that are the second CD of the "SF Collection"). KOF 95 is, I'd say, "acceptable" on PS. But by the time KOF98 came out the PS ports were basically unplayable defective software. Pretty much the same for Capcom stuff, although one could make the case for either the PS or SS versions of SFZ3 since they are quite a bit different.

So I guess since you won't do anything 3D, you are looking for 2D games that are exclusive to PS, and actually good.

Hmm...

Rakugaki Showtime, Super Robot Wars Alpha (and Alpha Gaiden), the Gundam The Battle Master series (the best one is the US only release, "Gundam Battle Assault 2"), Gunners Heaven, Bomberman Land...um...DDR?

Hard to do, this. Most of my PS games are 3D. I quite like Love and Destroy, the Choro Q games, Kamen Rider (no, really), Slap Happy Rhythm Busters, Tobal 2, The Italian Job.

Einhander! Get Einhander, you cannot go wrong with it.

Hmmm, then get maybe Parappa the Rapper, Star Ocean: The Second Story or Tempest X3!  Why not all 3

Yes, I recommend this game if you like retarded skill systems, boring characters, river dance, androgynous villains in thongs, obscure references to other games in the series, bland locations, and furries.

This game was Square's reactionary attempt to win back the squeers after its courageous but flawed attempt to shake up the Final Fantasy series in the eighth installment.  Because of this it is a boring, conservative, and uninspiring game.  Do not play it unless you really like the series.

If you want to play a good RPG with an innovative battle system, play Grandia.

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far.

That game just shot up near the top of my to-buy list.  :D

Yea I meant the SF collection that has SF 2 World Warrior to Hyper fighting. I have the import Capcom Generation version, its solid. I don't care for the Alpha ports on PS1. KOF 95 was perfectly fine on PS1,its one of the few 2D fighters you can say that about as it is missing hardly a thing. Only the remixed music and load times tend to annoy. Power Instinct 2 import is supposed to be good,as is the import copy of Last Blade, but I have not played either of those 2,so thats really up in the air with me.

The 2D shooters on both tend to be the same quality or very close, except the US Gunbird port on PS1 under the Mobile Light Force name. That port had way too many problems to be treated as a serious port. They edited stuff out,so it was kinda annoying.
