Nintendo bringing back the powerpad?
« on: March 03, 2008, 09:17:22 PM »
Okay, so all you wii geeks probably already read about it. Nintendo is apparently releasing some sort of Wii powerpad called the "Wii Fit." Wtf?, lol. As a big fan of the old skool powerpad and all of its games (yes, even the fitness game lol), I'm definitely interested in Nintendo's new invention. What do you dudes think? Information was taken from the link below:

Its been out here in Japan for awhile now, mainly marketed to the many bored housewives.  I think many Wii-lovers would get some fun out of the thing.  Personally I hate it, but then again I dislike the Wii itself so I'm a bit biased against it.

I love the people that hate the Wii for no reason.

What about people that hate it because it looks like poo compared to the real next-gen. systems, has poor online support, has a weak library of games loaded with mini-game collections and kiddie crap, lacks a hard drive, too often relies on gimmicky controls that feel tacked on and would play better with conventional controls, and is incapable of playing a frickin' DVD.  I like the Wii and the few great games that have come out for it (and more importantly, the way the ladies are attracted to it), but I can also understand why some peeps may not care for it.

I think part of the reason people hate the Wii irrationally, is because they see other people looking like dorks playing it, and they're afraid of looking like dorks themselves. Thus, Wiiphobia.

The Wii is a "real" next-gen system.

Not to start another Wii vs. PS3/360 war, but the Wii games that actually have good graphics don't look that much worse than the PS3/360. Yeah they're a little worse, but it's nothing to passionately hate on over. The "OMG TEH WII SUXORZ SO MUCH THE CHARACTERS ON MY PS3 G4M3S L@@K SO REAL THEY LOOK LIKE MY NEIGHB@R" shit is getting really old. As far as the game library goes-- any time you have a large game library, you usually also have a larger selection of crap titles. So just f*cking ignore them. Get the good ones. Of course the PS3 doesn't have as many crappy games, I think the entire PS3 library consists of 6 titles right now. It's still relatively early in this generation, and I firmly believe the best is yet to come. The Wii has some real gems already, and it has some unique ablities the other consoles lack. The Wii has breathed new life into FPS-type games, a genre which I previously hated with a passion in earlier generations because playing FPS games with a regular controller is a f*cking joke.

And too many kiddie games? What kind of an argument is that? Nintendo has always had more kiddie games than the competition, going all the way back to the NES. Don't buy 'em if you don't like 'em.

All that said, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy by any stretch of the imagination but their current-gen system does a lot more for me at this stage of the game than the other contenders. The PS3 and 360 are just "more of the same." The same being the same shit we've been playing since the N64 in 1996.

The one good thing the PS3 offers at this point is the ability to play Blu-ray discs and upscale classic DVDs. Because of that reason, I plan on buying a PS3 in the near future. It would just be an added bonus if one day a PS3-exclusive was released that I actually wanted to play.

EDIT: BTW Necromancer, that rant was in no way aimed at you specifically, just the general Wii-hating public.

I agree nat. The Wii has put out some really nice looking titles and it's still early in the life of the Wii.

I'm not against the Wii exactly, but I am against the trend that Nintendo officially started with the DS, but I consider the N64 to be the first of the "we cannot keep up with the current generation so we'll fake like we're not trying to" consoles from Nintendo.  The Ultra 64 started out nice, but eventually it was stripped down so badly that it basically couldn't live up to any of the promises.

Then came the DS.  Nintendo said shortly after launch that they realized it was a titanic leap behind the PSP but that they were not trying to compete with Sony...right.  Sure the DS has its charm, and a good library of remade GBA/SNES titles to keep you interested, but in the end it just feels like a toy when you can swap between it and the PSP.

Next came the Wii, but this time it felt more like a, "Whoops, we've mixed up our console parts." type promotion in the (if you excuse the pun) flavor of those cereal or cookie commercials as the Wii came out with GC style memory ports, PS2 style video, the looks of a Mac 3.5" external floppy drive from the early 90's, and a "virtual console" which plays all sorts of older games.  Then you add in a ninja turtle-esque controller that Donatello might have come up with in the Archie comics.  They might as well have called it "The WTFamicon", then I would be able to take it somewhat seriously...but Wii?  Honestly...Wii?  Calling a box "360" is less laughable.

I think calling it the Wii was probably Nintendo's best decision. I don't really think too much about the names of machines, but I agree the 360 isn't the greatest name for a console ever created, but tacking a "3" at the end of PS isn't exactly what I would call imaginative. As for the look of the Wii I find it looks better than the PS3. Honestly the PS3 looks like an ancient early 1980s RCA VCR.

Nintendo has been around since the late 1800s making games. Their primary interest is in making games fun, not in making "multi-media centres". The N64, DS and Wii fit that category. I for one logged more hours on the N64 than on the PS. Why? Because the N64 had quality over quantity. Sure the PS had TONS of games, but most of them weren't worth removing the packaging. Bond: Golden Eye and Super Mario World 64 made the N64 worth owning alone IMHO. The GameCube in my mind was a weak effort, so I'm glad they stepped it up with the Wii.

To be honest, and it's still early in this new generation, I haven't been wooed by any of the new consoles, except for the Wii. The graphics on the PS3 and 360 are a step above the previous generation, but not "eyes popping out of my head in bewilderment" better. But again, we're still early in the game and the graphics will undoubtedly improve.

I didn't say I hated the Wii.  I said I dislike it.  This is mainly because of the games.  There are zero Wii games yet that I actually want to play.
From what I've seen, RE4 is one of the best Wii games, and I've already played it on GC and PS2, so I'll pass on a third version of the same game.  As someone who mainly buys PCE/NeoGeo/Saturn games, I like more traditional stuff.  The Wii lacks this entirely right now.  I'd gladly pickup a Wii if it ever has games that interest me but it currently doesn't.  I've played it at friends houses, and it can be fun in short time spans, but there is no reason for me to own one.

I don't like Wiifit because once again, everything on it so far is just more mini-games.  Nothing that has any lasting appeal.  Yet, I mention that I don't like the system and everyone calls me a "wii hater."  Some of you Nintendo fans really need to calm down.  Everyone is entiled to their own tastes, and for WiiFit I have actually used it several times, and it wasn't for me.  How many of you have actually tried it yet?

I don't hold company biases, I go where the games I like go.  Hell I'm proud of my PC-FX as it has some great games.  If the Wii gets something I like, I'll buy one.  Otherwise I never will.

There are two Wii games that I really like, Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy.  Super Mario Galaxy doesn't need the Wii controls, as it would be just as good if not better without.  FPS games like Metroid Prime certainly work better with Wii controls.  No other game on the system is very interesting, and my Wii spends most of it's time in the "off" position.  Mario Kart might be good.  I don't care about Smash Brothers.  Fortunately Mario Kart will let you use a Gamecube controller.  It would look much better in HD and with digital sound (the Wii is limited to wimpy Pro Logic 2 analog sound, even the old man Xbox had 5.1 in-game sound, hell the PS2 did DTS in some games and also had other games with 5.1 Dolby Digital cut scenes).  As always, Nintendo is behind the curve.  The friend code thing truly sucks major anus grease.

Oh, and I showed the Wii to a girl and she did not like it, so it is not a babe-magnet.
