Yeah i just started getting into the whole Famicom thing i dont think i will collect hardcore or anything like that for it but a few games here and there as i find ones am interested in and have the money to spend.

Am using a GenNex system i got on a trade to play the Famicom games on and it seems so far to be working well for me which is cool.

Right now i have only 7 Famicom games and 2 NES games so as you can see am just getting started with this but so far am digging it. :D

Yeah, the NEX really is a great NES/Famicom solution despite what some hardcore FamiFanBoys might say. I also have an original NES, and I have to say, the NEX gets a lot more play.

NES/Famicom
Genesis/Mega Drive
SNES/Super Famicom
Saturn (Got a Japanese one recently. Only have one game for it now, Dracula X: NotM)

Oh and MAME rocks! I love digging out those obscure arcade games that never had official home versions! All of you must play Boogie Wings! You get to shoot down a cyborg Santa Claus in it!

Ahh ok collecting isn't to expensive for it long as go for loose carts not boxed.

Me i go the boxed route but i'm rather picky and i like having the games complete.

As for the nex i've seen mix reponse towards it..over it's compatibiliy issue with some games.

If your happy with it that's fine then but of corse it won't play the jpn castlevania 3.

Wich is a shame since it is a realy good version of the game.

All in all if you ever run into a game that doesn't work on the nex, import a famicom av it's the best model you can get for playing fami carts.

That's my setup and it works great so far.

Indeed, the AV Famicom and a converter seems to be the way to go for NES and Famicom games. What's not to like about it? It's small, it has the Famicom 15-pin expansion port, has NES controller ports, and it uses standard Nintendo AV cables. It's pricey, but it will do you better than a NEX. And yes, I have actually played the NEX, and while it's not all that bad, it still needs a bit of improvement.

and then I go "yeah I remember playing that 2 days ago because I still have my SNES, retard"

I have a NEX, and you are right, it's not all bad, especially for a combo famicom/NES setup. I am fortunate to own a Nes II, however, and with a famicom converter stolen from an early release Gyruss, it plays basically everything.

That said, however, I find the NES era stuff hasn't aged well. I much prefer the 16-bit era, which was the same style of games, only less 'rough around the edges'.

It's the same reason I dislike PS1/N64 stuff. It's all really crappy, early versions of the stuff we're playing now.

As to what I'm playing right now, Persona 3 FES, Raiden III and Puzzle quest on the new stuff, and Legendary Axe & Dragon Spirit on the TG.

This thursday, though, my 'insta-collection' shows up. It'll be nerd nirvana this weekend

Should have gone MVS. Be prepared to pay out your retirement fund for games.

No man I am free and easy baby!

:) No wife, no kids..its cool! Think of me like those two cool f*ckers from easy rider, but without a motorbike!

Anyway, first of all I'm only going to be buying the older games, they are pretty cheap. I'm unsure of how much i would actually pay for a game, but theres lots of the old ones that I can get and then we will see..maybe one or two expensive ones per year.

I wouldn't even bother with the "expensive" games for the AES - and I'm a Neo Geo fan.  You realize "expensive" in this case really does mean E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E  like $500-$1000 ??  Astronomical, asinine amounts like that.   You should just stick to the early games a la Blues Journey / Baseball Stars and all the great beat 'em ups (Fatal Furies, Mutation Nations, Burning Fights).  Find yourself a nice lot. Something tells me you'll find yourself considering an MVS after not too long.

You're going through the same process most Neo Fans go through.  Almost everyone buys an AES first unless they buy a cabinet.  Consolized MVS boards seem prohibitively expensive at first, and almost everyone gets into Neo Geo because of the older games, like Samurai Shodown 2, which is really common and inexpensive on the home system.  A home system looks nicer and seems like the right choice, but you'll almost certainly change your mind later.

Then, it won't be long before you want to play the Metal Slugs: part 1 is the best...and also the most counterfeited cart for the system.  If you even consider buying that cart (assuming you have $1000-2000) make sure you're an expert on detecting a fake.  And it's inevitable that the newer games will start to look appealing: if you're into fighters you'll want to play some of the newer ones like MOTW and the Last Blade series; and if you're into shooters you'll probably want to play Pulstar, Blazing Star, and Twinklestar Sprites (all kinds of stars!).  Eventually you might find yourself wanting an MVS exclusive, like the incredibly fun Shock Troopers.

You'll consider buying an MVS->AES converter like the Super Converter II.  If you do, you'll be ok with it at first...until you start to notice the scaling issues.  And then Metal Slug X won't play because you have a revision 3-6 motherboard.  Or maybe you'll end up with a Phantom 1 that will abuse your cart slot and won't play the newer Playmore games.

OH, and the UNIBIOS (http://unibios.free.fr/ ): want to be able to change the region of your games, use cheat codes, soft reboot, insert coins from the joystick, or play the games music in a sound test mode?  I hope you're good with a soldering iron, because the AES' BIOS is not socketed, so it will be a real pain to swap in, even if you have some experience with that sort of thing.

Not to dash down your excitement, though.  I love the home carts, and I'm not at all saying that you made a bad decision in buying an AES.  Alls I'm sayin' is: an MVS is a nice supplement.

Since you're in the UK, and probably looking to build your collection, try this thread out for some home carts:

I'm not sorry about this, as I'm not sorry about ANY attack by the goverrats.

I am.

An MVS should be every "new" NeoGeo player's first system. Let them get into things a little bit, decide if they are REALLY serious about the console. If so, and for some reason you still want an AES, at that point you'll probably be OK to buy one.

But to buy one as your first Neo.... Man I just can't imagine.

You see SignOfZeta have seizures over $100 American TurboGrafx games, shit, I'd hate to see him start collecting for NeoGeo AES.

I'll be straight up and admit that I don't have the kahunas to collect for the AES. I've been humming and hawing over an $89 Terra Cresta II for months now. lol

Thank you guys and Lochlan Thanks, that was a lot of good information :)

The price for the system was cheap, a while back I picked up 6 games for cheap too...Would I pay 1000 dollars for a game, no! No way...

If I end up loving my neo as much as my pc engine, will I get an mvs..probably!

:)
