Question About Ys Book I+II US Packaging.
« on: March 06, 2005, 09:46:57 AM »
I recently purchased Ys Book I+II from a seller on Ebay who neglected to mention that there is no inlay in the CD case for this game.  It was delivered in a generic white CD case, with only the instruction manual and game CD.  I've noticed that there are several instances of this on Ebay.

Did this game ship as a pack-in game, or something, like the Gate of Thunder 3-in-1 disk did, without a rear case inlay?  Did it ship in retail boxes without a case inlay?  I've noticed that TTI cheapened the packaging for a lot of games near the end of the Turbo, and neglected to ship Hucards in hard cases (e.g. they just put loose cards in a plastic tray, along with the manual for many games).  Did they do this with CDs as well?

The seller insists that the game was like this when it was shipped in the original box, and was not a pack-in.

Yes after a certain point, games were made without the big cardboard box and just the jewel case, instructions, and game. A for Ys, there were two versions released: The original 1990 one when it first came out for the TGCD and then later in 1992 it became a pack game along with a couple of other games for the Turbo Duo system. The Duo pack-in released version had different CD art than the originally released one. The difference was the original had the Ys logo towards the top center of the CD and the Duo released one had "Ys" in italic letters towards the top left side of the CD. As far as the jewel case itself, I'm not sure if the Duo release one had black or white lining, but I know the original had black for the case.

I hope this helps.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Thanks for the information.  Upon further inspection of a few items on Ebay, it would appear that I have the second version (has the words "Turbo Duo" on the CD).  This is just like the one in the second link:

The only difference is that mine does not have the rear-case inlay that is shown.  Were most of the DUO pack-ins shipped in any cases at all, or were they those cheapo paper stock covers?

hahhaaa.

i just bought the 1992 turboduo version of Ys because I wanted the two different pressings.

the TurboDuo pack-in games included manuals (loose) + CDs... I can't remember if they came in jewel cases or not.

the original release is much nicer, obviously, but go to TZD and you might be able to grab a manual for $3.  edit:  ooops, i see you have a manual.

If you find a kind soul, they may scan the orginal CD inlay... you'd print it and then fashion your own insert (you're not missing much, the original TG-CD games had all-black inlays... w/ "CD game", game title and "TG-CD" logos... but that's it.

I overpaid for my copy of 1992 Ys.  I must have put in a higher bid than I intended.  I did snag a nice complete copy of King of Casino for $1 + 3 s/h.  so i guess everything evens out.

There is something about King of Casino that makes me love it. I know it's not much of a game because it's just casino kind of stuff, but it's so relaxing to me. I think it's a nostalgic feeling from when I first got into the Turbo scene towards the summer of 2002 and I remember downloading the King of Casino game because my brother was a gambling kind of guy. What makes me remember the game is the music, which is very soothing. If the music wasn't so soothing to me, I probably wouldn't really care for this game at all :P .

Haha, thanks. It might not be an "action-packed game", but it's quite a soothing game because of the soft music and atmosphere. Also I dig the way your guy stays in a hotel (which kind of has a digital comic look) and then goes out cruising for casinos. I'm not a casino game fan, but this is the best one I have played :P .

Yeah, an easy way to distinguish them is that the original TG CD version says TurboGrafx 16 CD on it and the Duo Pack in version says Turbo Duo on it. :)

This site has quite a few cover/cd scans if you need any. Y's doesn't have much to it though, just a lot of black ink.

There is a yellow strip that says Ys tm Book I & II on my copy that's above the black "CD GAME" part. That scan on the Pc engine cover site doesn't have the yellow strip on it.

Mine has the same yellow stripe. I never looked at that particular one on the cover site, just assumed it might be the right one.

Not all the Turbo CD versions came with a map. Mine didn't. Neither did my Dragon Slayer(I bought nearly every Turbo game brand new back in the day).

But both were bought here in Canada, so maybe we just got shafted(although I've since found a few used copies locally with maps).
