Sound effects
« on: June 06, 2011, 02:21:09 AM »
This could probably even go into a regular PCE category.

What kind of sound effects would you all prefer for retrocade?

Im starting to make some and dont know if people would prefer 80s arcadelike sounds,  or something a little more modernized.

I am leaning towards going for straight up badass 80s arcade sounds where possible.  I may possibly bust out a video, or a demo ROM to let you listen to some of what I am doing (For Pyramid Plunder currently).

so, thoughts/opinions/hate?

I know that....

my point is I don't *want* to use sampled sfx, because they don't sound like PSG sound effects anymore.

They sound like samples, because thats what they are.

I say mix it up. It might be funny to have mostly retro sound FX and then occasionally have something all fancy. Sort of an inside joke. And hey, lots of retro games played with sampled voice, so a few samples here and there could be interesting. Maybe a selection of sampled things at the beginning of each level. Like a mummy threatening to curse your intrepid explorer. Display the level and pause it while there's an ominous "Who dares disturb my tomb?!" A few levels later you could hear "I curse you, grave robber!" or something like that. Play with it, yo!

I can do nice, deep, ominous voices well, so if you need some samples, lemme know.

I always thought alot of sampled sfx were very tacky.. few actually sounded great.

Vigilante stands out as one with nice effects.

and Altered Beast, even if its clunky.

Having some ADPCM stuff occasionally could be neat, but for the normal in-game ness, I am not too sure.

It might seem like a janky Amiga game?

You're not wrong, but it's usefull for sfx who are difficult to make realistic like Glass breakage ..
Decidedly you do not like samples at all ..

I don't think I did.  I know I did!
Lol, good luck ;-)

I try to avoid samples and craft glorious sound effects with the chip all by itself. :)

Maybe ill sit and make a glass breakage noise, kind of like the one in Bayou Billy.

Definitely 80's arcade in my opinion. The originality of sound effects dwindled down after the 80's, those early 80's lazer sounds were my favorite!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).
