Any of the Bust a move games.

Also the monster rancher games. They look 3D, but play strictly 2D.

I can't make any recommendations that others haven't already made, so I'll just wish you a belated happy birthday instead.  I would recommend Tomb Raider, but it hasn't aged that well and you're not interested in 3d anyway.

Strider 2 is pretty cool. There is a good remake of Lunar from the segacd.

Good, cuz I just bought it. Someone on eBay had a Strider 2/Strider PS1 bundle for a couple bucks. How does the port of Strider 1 hold up?

You need to know that due to a printing error the discs are mislabeled - the Strider 2 disc contains Strider 1 and vice versa.

Oh and I can't believe I forgot OMEGA BOOST. It's a mech SHMUP with a Panzer-Dragoon esque targeting system, and AWESOME graphics (wait til you see the psuedo-vector briefing screens!) and a kickass soundtrack including STATIC-X!!! It's made by Polyphony Digital, the makers of the Gran Tursimo series, and it OOZES quality. Trust me, the game KICKS ASS.

Oh yeah, Rib Ribbon also.  But only get it if you play using some kind of mod.  If you swap discs to load it, you will only be able to play the tutorial levels.  This is because to play the real game, you play it using your own music CDs and it generates the levels based on the music.  Because of this, the PSX needs to be able to load the TOC of the audio disc to enjoy it.

What was the clone of that game Square released only in Japan? That game was Rez before Rez was Rez.

The table of contents thing reminds me of this crazy article I read back when I first got the Internet, and looking back on it it HAD to be a joke. The premise was simple, you could run Japanese games on your American system (I THINK it was PS1, not entirely sure), but the TOC had to be around 90% similar otherwise it wouldn't work, and even if it worked streaming music and cutscenes wouldn't play correctly because of the inconsistencies, and sometimes there would be freezes/lockups/crashes.

I didn't know whether to believe that or not, still don't, but I don't care as pretty much all of my games are in English and I prefer them that way.

I found the game, it's called INTERNAL SECTION. It does the same thing as Vib Ribbon, it's just a little more interesting visually:

Internal Selection is ok, it plays like a weaker version of tempest.  I was thinking of suggesting it, but I didn't know if it was good enough, especially because it has very weak 3-d graphics and nat didn't want 3-d games.  I do consider it a good game though all of that said lol.  If you buy the Japanese Chocobo's Dungeon II, you get several levels of IS you can play on the demo disc.

Well then nat should stick to CD-i now shouldn't he!

If theres one thing you shouldn't do, that would be buying Forsaken for PS1. That game was waaaaay overhyped and overrated, and at the end of the day it's the shittiest Descent clone money can buy.

Stick with the original DOS Descent.

Descent is one of the only PSX games though that supports multiplayer with linked consoles though.  I remember playing it a long time ago at my friend's house on two TVs.  I don't know if the PS-one can link though or not.

No, unfortunately it can't. :(

Oh yeah, you need to pick up Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown. It's just like Duke 3D for PC and it has 2 new episodes, and also the music is by Mark Knight! HE RULES.

Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown has the BEST version of E1M1 "Stalker" EVER. And I will defend that to the grave.

But why don't you compare for yourself?

Stalker, from the original PC DN3D
