I have a pretty mediocre SD television and I have no trouble seeing flaws in DVDs. DVD just sucks.

who still don't mind watching standard DVDs.

I had no problem with regular DVD until I got this HD set. Now the limitations of the format are very apparent. The lower resolution and film grain from the standard DVD are very noticeable on the HD. Maybe my standard DVD player just sucks balls (which is possible, it's a good few years old), but either way if I'm going to get a new player I might as well get one to support the new format.

Here's the problem with HD-DVD it isn't the new format, it is a fleeting format.  I believe you would be better off spending your money on a DVD player with good image processing than to spend your money into a HD-DVD player where your money is going to this option rather than into the real nuts and bolts of the system.  And a copy of Einhander.  You need a copy of Einhander if you want to survive this format war.

Ever since I got a laserdisc player, I have no intention of buying any new movie formats :P .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I don't support either new format but I still have a very strong sense that HD-DVD will come out on top. In the meantime, I'm perfectly happy with my good ole regular DVDs and my nice normal television, playing movies with my PS2.

Huh?  All I ever hear about HD-DVD is the "lastest studio which has abandoned it" type of news.  While blu-ray keeps adding studios.  Don't only 2 major studios now only make HD-DVD discs?

It's kind of funny because I heard exactly the opposite. I think it's the he-said, she-said fanboysism running rampant again.

As far as I'm concerned, normal DVDs are fine.

Missa: that's just fanboyism run amok. Most studios who support the newer formats use HD-DVD because it costs less to produce discs that way. Only the really big studios support Bluray (Disney, for one) and only because they can afford it (some are hoping to ride the waves of the PS3...no one ever said that movie studios understood video game trends, and it's clear by this example that they don't). If you want to talk market share, then Bluray is currently in the lead with 70% market penetration, but this is due to the studios that support it being much larger. If you want to talk about the number of studios that support one side or the other, HD-DVD wins by about 6 to 1, but that doesn't have much effect on the number of releases available. Also, adult entertainment got a huge head start with HD-DVD (due to early lack of support by Bluray manufacturers), which has about 95% of that market...that's a very dominating slice of the pie (pun unintentional). Of course, neither format holds a candle to the existing DVD format and won't for some time to come. It's still too early to tell who will come out on top, but it seems the companies with the big bucks are pouring as much advertising as possible into Bluray promotions and it's starting to have an effect on the sheep. If the current advertising swarm keeps up, Bluray will probably win, much like VHS won over Betamax all those years ago. But the pricing is still going to have an impact; 20 years ago, Bluray might have won easily, but in our current Walmart-mentality society, people want things as cheap as possible and are going to take the less expensive route. HD-DVD is cheaper and likely always will be. So, with advantages and disadvantages on both sides of the fence, this is a war that's going to last a very long time.

Finally! lol. An honest to goodness objective view on the ridiculous HD-DVD vs Blu Ray format war. All this madness only hurts the consumer.

Actually, it hurts both formats, since I will not buy one until the war is over.

Indeed. Nor will I be buying.

This is why ideally I'd like a dual-format player. That way, I'll be covered regardless of what happens.

Well, you have to think of it from the manufacturer's point of view. There are probably redundant components in both that can't be shared, since they work in different ways. You're paying them for 2 players crammed into one case.

Except for computer drives, oddly enough.  LG sells a combo drive that can read HD-DVD and can read/write Blu-Ray, DVD, and CD; all for only $300.  Not a bad price for such a versatile drive, especially considering it's one of the first of its type; the only problem being that manufacturer's will decide to charge an extra $500 to put it in a pretty box to put next to your television.

Getting raw data onto/off of a disc is one thing; turning it into pretty, hi-def video is quite another.
