In the before times, before PP and Atlantean, we (OldMan and I) had talked about the immediate sequel to Insanity, called Hysteria.
At the time, Keranu (where the fuck did Keranu go? lol) was doing sprite work for it.
Then, the other projects happened, including the Xbox 360 port of Insanity that is now officially unable to be obtained (Thanks Microsoft!). AND THE ADDITION OF PAUL WHO CAN ACTUALLY DRAW
It's probably good that we waited since it gave me time to use NTTE and crap to rewrite parts of game code I made for Atlantean which didn't exist at the time but will come in handy, and it let us flesh out a new character better. This is better than working just from Insanity.
It will be:
- Super CD-ROMROM, Starring RomRom.
- A CD soundtrack featuring the crap I made 8 years ago and more crap I will make now.
- better robot voices and sound effects than the last time.
- SCROLLING MAPS
- No Parallax
- MORE THAN ONE ENEMY TYPE!
- MORE THAN ONE LEVEL ART!
- The walls won't kill you.
- Or will they?
- Better than Insanity
- We hope
It will not be:
- Saber Rider
- or the Star Sheriffs
In terms of where we're at, there's nothing visual to show you yet because Paul's still deciding on the art direction for bgs and the sprite.
I used the Nantettatte Engine time after Inferno to rewrite parts of our code in order to get things going. I've rewritten some other bits and pieces and also started a "Fuck Mappy" utility that has been mentioned a few times in this forum and chat. We will be using that for this game, and once it seems to be surely doing what is expected/useful, I will share it.
For shits and giggles, here is the original plot I made shortly after seeing Tron Legacy in theatres 15 too many times, right before porting Insanity to Xbox 360.
I wish I had the sprites Keranu was doing. I am not sure where they even ended up. If I find them I will post them. We were going with a 90s candy-kid-raver-mixed-with-Tron2.0 vibe and it looked pretty funny. They might even be in my PMs at PCEF... oh.
The year was 2214. Xenotron city was controlled by the evil robot master. Robot sentries prowled the streets, imprisoning all who opposed the master. Life sucked.
Arkhan, the most notorious hacker in Xenotron city was imprisoned by the evil robot master for tampering with forbidden parts of the grid, in an attempt to take the robot master down.
Arkhan, not one to be defeated very easily at all, made short work of the robot master’s labyrinthine grid-complex. He blasted countless robots into mere particles, and finally confronted the evil robot master himself. Arkhan defeated the robot master and narrowly escaped the exploding complex with his life. He returned battered, bruised, and without his favorite nano-disc.
It is now 2216. The robot master’s reign upon Xenotron city is a distant memory. Peace reigns most triumphantly upon Xenotron.
Arkhan is enjoying another peaceful day at the I/O tower command station. The peace is interrupted by the sound of phazors discharging in the distance, followed by grinding metal and shrieks of terror. It sends a shiver down Arkhan’s spine. He runs out of the tower and sees droids clamoring down the streets of Xenotron. They are grabbing civilians and throwing them into containment pods, which are then carried off by giant cyber beetles.
Dodging enemy fire, Arkhan makes it home. He sees what he feared most.
The remains of his long lost nano-disc lay in the middle of the room. “Crap” shouts Arkhan. Arkhan dashes around the house, checking all of the rooms. Empty. No one is home. “Not. Frigging. Good.” Are the words that escape Arkhan’s clenched teeth.
He steps into his computer lab, activates a switch, and a hatch opens. Laying in pristine condition is the phazor he used to escape the grid two years ago. He quickly straps it around his waist and runs out to the garage. He hops on his custom built hover-bike, opens the garage door and cranks the throttle.
Blasting droids with one hand and steering with the other, Arkhan guns it for the remains of the grid complex.
As he nears it, he sees something he did not expect: A new complex emerging around the old one. “Time to fight the power.” is all Arkhan says as he hops off his bike, letting it coast off into the distance. Arkhan struts into the complex, phazor at the ready.
You are Arkhan. The robot master is back. It’s not just about justice this time. This time, he’s got your girlfriend.
Make them pay.
Hard.
Questions I have for myself about this.
Do hoverbikes even have throttles?
Why did I choose beetles?
Isn't saving a girl part of "justice" ? lol.
The original plan I had was that you would end up saving the girl character and she would be playable from then on. Now, you'll just play as her since I don't feel like dealing with LeotardMan again, lol.
