Title: Octurbofest
Post by: chany60126 on August 14, 2012, 12:08:52 PM
The Video Game Summit was a blast. It was nice seeing familiar faces as well as new ones. But why wait until MGC for another turbo gathering??
That's right, Turbo Fest is back, but this time with thrills and chills! Behold: Octurbofest!! Now at a new venue, we will be rocking it out at the best and largest arcade in the Midwest, Galloping Ghost Arcade.
Admission to Octoberfest is $5. Upon entering the establishment, ask for Turbo Fest, and they’ll point you in the right direction. If you want access to the arcade it’s an additional $15, but all the machines are set to free play and you can stay as long as you want. The event will take place on October 20th. The address of the arcade is 9415 Ogden Avenue in Brookfield, IL which is only a few miles away from Chicago. The show will start at 12 PM and end at 7 PM.
Come experience some of the best games on CD and hu card, including the Super Grafx and many more. And of course, no Turbo Fest is complete without the fun 5-player Battle Lode Runner and Bomberman 94 matches. Plenty of turbo/pce systems will be available for play.

I justify driving 9 hours for it :P
I drove 16 hours for it. I can't guarantee I'll be at this one, if I go, I'm probably going to fly. :P
I'm hoping to organize a similar type of get together maybe in the Raleigh, NC area this Fall as well. I just started a new job, but hope to find a location for the event soon.
Man, I really want to go up to this. I had a blast this past July.

My plan is to be there. Not sure who I can all bring with!! hopefully some more chummers!!
we should organize some sort of camp/hotel/motel/rental for the weekend to keep gaming the night away. I missed that from MGC this year, and heard it was rokken.
BTW- for those looking for other gaming events in the area:
March Midwest Gaming Con - Milwaukee July- Video Game Summit - Chicago August - GENCON -Indianapolis (HUGE E-Game arena, looking to contribute to the retro section in 2013!)
And don't forget about 'Pizza n' Games' in Central Wi... LOL Debating on whether to do it in February or Sept of 2013....

THIS IS TOO FAR AWAY.
Nonetheless, I'm going to see how much it would cost to take a train from NYC to Chicago.
If it isn't too crazy.... (I don't think I'd want to drive that far, especially with my crappy old car).
To be continued... (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
UPDATE: ~$100? That's good. Now to see if the dates work...

Great idea esteban! I looked into going by train and it looks like round trip the train ride would only cost $217 (from Fayetteville, NC). I might be able to swing this after all.
I see there's a little motel within walking distance to the Galloping Ghost that looks to be only $43/night. And a bus ride from the train station to the motel is only $2.25. Very tempting.

Plus, to be honest, I don't mind the train. I can read/work/relax with electronic devices. As long as I have a beverage and snack, I'm happy (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).
You might be hitting Penn Station NYC if you take the train? HA!

Yea, check out the E-Game arena. Lots of fun! They have a row of old consoles - NES/SNES/GENS/NEO/3DO/Saturn and other stuff... I think Jag maybe? I talked with some of the guys that ran it on the gencon forums, and they were excited about bringing more retro/rarez stuff. So we could see some turbob in 2013. If you do happen to check it out this year, let me know if they have expanded it at all. :)

As much as I want to make it to this, it doesn't look to be in the cards this time around. I just started a new job and they're gonna need me sticking around for a awhile. I'm still going to try to plan a meetup in the NC area sometime this Fall, though. Maybe sometime in November. Hopefully I'll have some details tomorrow.

I'll be there - Galloping Ghost has to be seen to be believed; so amazing. Should be an awesome time.
If anyone would like to split a hotel let me know - it's far enough away from Milwaukee that it makes more sense to just stay overnight.
Also - for the Chicagoland folks, I went out with some buddies to Emporium in Wicker Park a couple weekends ago - it's like Brooklyn's BarCade but with a different vibe. A little on the hipster side for my taste but they have some nice cabinets in there and a really good beer list: http://emporiumchicago.com/

Depends - if you're flying into midway it's probably about a 20 minute drive. I'd say it's about 40 minutes from O'Hare (don't believe google map's estimates - you have to account for shitty illinois traffic).
Galloping Ghost is kind of out in the 'burbs a bit - not downtown at all. Depending on what kinds of deals you get you might be better off renting a cheap car for the trip. It's not like you're going to be able to walk out of your hotel and go to GG.
Is the gang up for another bank-breaking trip to that badass retro gaming store downtown?

I can fly to match anothers arrival time, I have no prob chilling at O'hare waiting(there is a bar, right?!) for someone so we can split the cab or even better, call the BlueBMW Taxi Express! My Friday arrival options are: 8:29am, 10:50am, 12:41pm, 3:26pm, 5:16pm, 7:12pm, 9:24pm.
Public transport looks like 2 hour trek but you pass right by GG on the way to Red Roof. (I think out-of-towners should all stay in the same hotel so we can after party!)

I think they wanted $250 for it last time I was there. Tack on another 25.00 for sales tax 10.25%. I think Chicago is tied with L.A. for the highest sales tax in the nation.

I think that is the one. It's the one downtown. I am not positive that a trip would be doable since it takes several hours to get there. That will be Chany and D-Dan's call.
Title: Re: Octurbofest

People Play Games is a neat store as they have quite a diverse selection of games for different systems. The prices can be hit or miss with some of the rarer games such as the one Mathius alluded to above. The most difficult thing about People Play Games is parking and especially the commute. If you try going there in the late evening or at night, it is a nightmare.
As far as the Friday trip is concerned before the fest, I will talk it over with Dan and see if it's doable. It also depends on what time people will be arriving in town and where they will be staying at for purposes of carpooling. I'll keep you guys updated.

I'll have my truck (driving down from Milwaukee but staying overnight) so if anyone would like to carpool over to People Play Games I'm down. I can fit about 5 total unless you guys want to pile into the truck bed, haha.
Did we decide on a hotel location? I'm ready to book but I want to make sure I'm staying in the same place as everyone else. Last time I strayed from the group I wound up in the honeymoon suite at the comfort inn at Lombard. Quite the uh...experience.

Haha no rush on that!
good - because I just realized that I put my last available FM chip in Mati's SMS haha. I just ordered a new batch; should be here in about 2 months. sorry for the delay man!

I'm in Northwest Indiana as well, and I've been wanting to make a trip up to PPG, but I just haven't found the time yet.
It's definitively worth the trip. If subsequent trips are worth it, well, that's up to you to decide.

Did we ever pick a hotel? Just looking at Google Maps - you have to go about 4 miles out to find a real, non-fleabag hotel - there's a holiday inn express and a hampton inn both within striking distance and fairly cheap.
If you guys are down with crappy motels, there are a bunch within walking distance of GG. I just tend to avoid those because i don't want to wake up with bed bugs and STDs!

Sorry, I was really looking forward to the octurbo fest and meeting you guys. Gonna have to wait until the next meet.

I'm probably going to book at the Hampton Inn - Red Roof is about a 15-20 minute drive; a little farther than I want to be (cheap though!)
Address for the Hampton: 2222 Enterprise Drive, Westchester, IL (708) 409-1000
Address for the Red Roof: 1113 Butterfield Road, Downers Grove, IL (630) 963-4205
Anybody up for some beers or something later on Saturday night after the festivities?

I plan to fly in to ORD sometime Friday afternoon and somehow get to the Red Roof. If anyone will be traveling by the airport on Friday, I could plan my flight so-as to catch a ride but the logistics could get tricky so bus/taxi is my backup.

Deep dish pizza is awesome, although I have never had pizza from Lou Malnati's. I wish there were a dine-in location closer to the arcade.
The past few years we have been gathering at Roundhead Pizza following the conclusion of the Video Game Summit. Their deep dish pizza is superb. They don't bury your pizza with cheese like they do at Giordano's.

Eh, Lou Malnati's vary greatly in quality from location to location. For example, the one nearest to you and I in Carol Stream is awful. I think Gino's East is a bit better as far as chains go.

Malnati's is my favorite out of the chains, though honestly they're all pretty good and it's really just a matter of what you're in the mood for. Deep Dish is one of those things you eat once a year and get your fix and you don't want to eat it again for another year, haha.

<raise hand> I'm staying at the Red Roof, dunno when I'll arrive though.
Nectarsis and I should be in probably around 8pm or 9pm to the Red Roof - maybe we can reserve a table or just figure out a meetup point at the hotel.
Will be showing up at just around kick off of Octurbofest with some chummers on Saturday. Also got reservations at this Red Roof Inn in Downers Grove. Should be an awesome time!! We should do some sort of gaming party Saturday night at the hotel.
:D - STOKED!!

Since this is just a get together to play games event (as far as I know), shouldn't we talk a little bit about what games each of us would like to see at this event? I'd hate for everyone to get together and only have Keith's Courage or Battle Royal to play together. A request list? That way the people who plan on attending can see the list and say..."Hey, I have that game. I'll bring it along".
I'm always in the mood to look at boobs and scantily clad (or less) ladies, so I'll start:
Strip Fighter II. I don't have it and have heard about how horrible the controls and animations, but I would like to see it. If someone here has it, bring it along!

I was kind of planning on bringing my region-modded Duo (just in case it could be of use) along with a Turbo Tap, 5 controllers, and some games to play. I could also bring my non-region-modded regular TG-16 if anyone thought that it might be useful. PCE Daisakusen tells me that I have 244 games, so if anyone requests anything from my collection list (http://www.pcedaisakusen.net/2/34/532/show-collection.htm), then I'd be happy to bring it. I'll probably also bring my Turbo trade swag in case anyone wants to do some trades.
Does anyone know how the rooms are set up? Like how many TV's are going to be available? Systems available? Power outlets available? (Maybe some power strip extension cords should be brought?) I also assume that plenty of chairs will be available, but I do have 4 folding chairs that I could bring along if useful. Since I live in the area, I'd be happy to bring anything that I have that would be useful.
Sorry for all of the questions, I'm just getting excited as Octurbofest draws nearer.

Of course I cannot check into RR until later in the day, so I'll be a mall rat for a few hours at the Yorktown shopping center. I'll have my phone, so if anyone is gonna be around early on Friday and want to start this party early, PM me and we can hammer out the details.
Sounds like ppl will have enough hardware, I'll just bring my skillz.

Would we be thinking of bringing a nice CRT TV for gaming on at the hotel as well? Just curious, cause I know hotel gaming with turbob on those new fangled LCD TVs can be a bit of a pain.
I could always cart a smaller gaming TV if it's needed. :)
Title: Re: Octurbofest
Post by: chany60126 on October 18, 2012, 07:20:01 AM
We plan on bringing 3 CRT TVs for the TG+CD, Turbo Duo and Super Grafx. BlueBMW will be bringing his X68000 with the monitor. There will also be a Laseractive present, which may share a station with one of the turbo consoles. With that being, there are 4 lag-less LCD monitors that hang from the wall, which would be situated above where the CRTs would be located.
@Bardoly, if you have foldable chairs, we would appreciate it if you could bring them. There will be couches inside, but the rest of the seats are bar stools which may be uncomfortable after sitting on them for a while. As far as bringing your Duo, I think it would be a good idea to bring it. No guarantee that we will be able to use it, space permitting, but if we can, the more the merrier. :) Not sure how many outlets will be present, but if you have extra power strips and/or extension cords, that would be helpful.

If anyone is interested in talking Midwest Gaming Classic 2013, I'll be there in I hope a blue MGC t-shirt with different controllers on it. So if you're interested in joining the crew, feel free to pull me away from whatever I'll be playing and I'd be happy to go over the show with you.
On a side note, are there any systems or stuff you need for the Turbo room? Sounds like it is going to be packed already, but as some here already know I can can provide you guys with a little of just about anything. 10-player Saturn Bomberman, perhaps?
Later.

If anybody has an extra CRT with S-Vid laying around I would be eternally grateful - I dug out my Neo-Geo AES and 5-6 games from storage to bring along, but my gaming monitor is way to big to throw in the car.
see you guys tonight!

I was wondering the same thing! (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
YES, we are impatient.
Here's a crappy cell phone pan of the room. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6zbuuqwBpw&feature=g-like
I got a few pics of the festivities around the Galloping Ghost- (http://imageshack.us/a/img844/7994/img20121020113627.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/a/img19/8932/img20121020113621.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/a/img716/9045/img20121020112801.jpg)
I also have video of the dinner out and some of our AWESOME SONIC SPIKE BEACH VOLLEYBALL OCTURBOFEST TOURNAMENT OF THE AGES 2012 that I'll be putting up at a later time. ;)
damn you're fat! and i'd think it would be a fire code violation to be blocking rooms 148-164.
:D
Yo mamma's so fat, that she takes up 3 hotel rooms at the Red Rash Inn! LOL. Actually I dragged a grand total of 7 central WI (Who may or may not actually be 'from' central WI) peeps down for the event. Everyone had a great time, but I kind of doubt we made any new forum members this weekend....LOL

Glad to hear you guys had fun, I sure did too. I got to hand it to you turboStar, Sonic Spike was a great tournament choice! The competition was pretty intense. Some people really got into the game, especially that James fellow that lost in the finals. :P
The turnout was much better than expected. I think Galloping Ghosts is a great venue choice for another Turbo Fest.

Yea, that was a blast. I feel bad we didn't get more chooties or high score challenges going. The Sonic Spike tourney took about 2 hours to get through. O_O
The thing that really shocked me is the winning team chose SNES games as their prizes after winning a TurboGrafx tournament!!!

Jeff vs. Majors drink-off 2012 I'd say was a draw.
I never sleeped on Saturday...went to the airport @ 5am! I had too much a head start on Friday..."MAGFEST!", I was rough that night but all well for the main event on Saturday.
Had a blast, the arcade was worth the trip plus all my turboheads in the house!

There were some great turbo games (thank you Blue), but I already had them all so that's why i went w/ the Diddy Kong.
I can't speak for Loong though.
I really wanted to play other people in that game.
That is the time limit problem you want to play this, and this and this, and you want to try to play w/ a few different people and they are all wanting to play different games w/ different people and then its 7pm.
Really great time though.

heh, sounds about right. MGC 2012 i got a grand total of like 6 hours of sleep from the time I left here in omaha til when i got back. and then i went to work, that's the kick in the ass that made me take an extra couple days off for it this year.

Alex, it was so cool to finally hang out and play some turbob with you. We had ourselves some action packed Battle Lode Runner and Bomberman 94 matches. I hope we can do this again real soon. :)
Thanks to Chany and D-master Dan for booking the room - and anybody else involved that I wasn't aware of.
Great times - good to see familiar faces and meet some new ones, too!

Not too happy with the quality, it's just been uploaded so maybe it will look better when it's fully uploaded....? I dunno... The added Shockman music is too loud at the beginning, but it's just Majors talking about how awesome the Neo Geo is anyway... :P

Ha! So that's Majors (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png). He's playing Nam '75, from the short glimpse of the scene. I haven't watched more than a few seconds of the video yet. So far this is infinitely better than the very shaky/blurry/haphazard videos that are usually posted.
FEEDBACK ON VIDEO: (Pending...)
UPDATE: All right, after pouring some coffee and settling down I watched the video. Here is my stream-of-consciousness reaction...
* I stand by my initial judgement--this was not the shaky/dizzying/blurfest that most videos excel in. BRAVO. * I was able to recognize a handful of folks in the video...Chany? ROTFLtlfjfljkdlfl? mathius & partner. * I didn't think that it was possible, but the Sonic Spike Championship wasn't lame. It actually looked fun. I would have loved to be there just for Sonic Spike (I don't think I've played this game for more than a few minutes). * I started guessing names to faces in the video, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW BETTER (not everyone in video is necessarily a member here). THAT SAID, I have already anointed the folks in the video with monikers from pcefx.com forums.

And I finaly got a credit roll thanks to Unibios unlimitied men* cheat. I've been playing that game since it came out and never beat it. The whole no continue on Dr. R. Muckly is rough.
*code will give you 9 men but if you leave the cheat on when you die, it glitches. You can pause, enable cheat, unpause giving you 9 men, then pause again, disable cheat, unpause then you will keep the 9 men.

In the infamous words of , "Nope! Not kidding!"
Yes, it's true. I had never played Bloody Wolf before this year's Octurbofest that can remember. It seemed to be an okay game, but I just got a taste of it before trying out Beemer's copies of Sylphia (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Sylphia.htm) and Faussete Amour (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Faussete_Amour.htm).
Sylphia seemed to be a decent shooter, but for the $200-300 price that's it has been seen at lately, I find it rather hard to price it that high. It seems that there are much better shoot-'em-ups out there for the PC Engine that go for far less.
Faussete Amour on the other hand, I rather enjoyed playing, although I never really felt like I could get the spinning jump attack down. I actually played the game for an hour or more and got to the boss of level four before having to pack it up. This game was already on my potential want list, and after playing it, it still is. I would just like to be able to find it for $40-60 cheaper than the $110-120 that it's currently priced at on eBay and elsewhere. As someone at Octurbofest mentioned, "Dracula X: Rondo of Blood is a better game.", so I'd like to find Faussete Amour for a cheaper price than I got my copy of Dracula X for, so if anyone has a copy that they's like to trade/sell, then let me know.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to next year's Octurbofest! Or if this can be done more often, that would be great, too!

BW has a rough feel-look to it. Yes, the hit box is whack and the isometric view does not work at times but the level design is varying and it is true to the arcade sans co-op. Solid game for $10-15...you could do far worse (ahm..Deep Blue)
