Of course.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Streets of Rage (1 and 2) was an awesome game. Perhaps the best scrolling beat 'em up ever. I remember playing at my friend's house at lunch having a blast with it. I also remember wishing that the Turbo would release a game like this.

I will tell you one thing, and I'm sure I'm pretty much alone on this one, but I never could stand the Genesis controllers. They felt flimsy and hollow, and the buttons were hard to use. I think it was the fact that the buttons were sunk, or at the same level as the rest of the controller. But I never liked the PS controllers either, and I get flamed on that too. The XBOX controllers are just superior in every way....but that's another thread.  :P

Oh, if I was to rank the systems:

1st Place - Turbo Grafx 16/PC Engine: Just one charming little piece of machinery with a ton of great games. Of course there's the whole "Turbografx is actually just an 8 Bit system" argument, but if that's the case then it just makes the Turbo Grafx even better. What does that say about the Genesis's "blast processing" if the Turbo (just a little 8-bit nobody) can dish out the same thing or better.

2nd Place - Super Nintendo/Super Famicon: A very close second. I love Nintendo. It also has the charm factor with all of its systems. It has great shooters like R Type III (worth getting the SNES just for that game), Rock n' Roll racing, etc... SNES has great scrolling as well and a great controller with 6 buttons.

3rd Place - Genesis: I never could really learn to love this machine, though it did have some great games (such as the above mentioned Streets of Rage, Strider, Ghouls and Ghosts and the ultra cool Disney games.). The Genesis just didn't have that charm factor going on like the SNES and the Turbografx. I found the controllers not necessarily uncomfortable, but just annoying to use...in spite  of the fact that it did sport one extra button over the Turbografx controller.

In the end, I would like to have all three systems.  Each system had their own selection of great games making each system great in their own way....man I would love to play Streets of Rage right now....

So Genesis lovers don't hate me for my blasphemy.   :P I was just giving my two cents.

I don't like the original giant Genesis pads, but Sega's 6-buttoners are nice enough.

@cosmind, what's your avatar supposed to be? reminds me of the character "Wind" from the lastest Akumajo Dracula adv. on NDS :)

I've been wondering the same, it looks super rad!

'tis the galaxy cowboy.  a sprite from a game design and concept that i'm considering developing once i complete my current game.  i have a few prospects that i'm waffling between though - so i'm not sure if it'll be the one just yet.
(@keranu, appreciated on the nod to radness, btw)

jell-o stage in world of illusion is brilliant, might i add

Agreed.  After playing with the proper Sega 6-button pad for awhile I held a 3-button once again.  It felt so hollow, so huge, so wrong.  There's no going back.  You need to get y'self a 6-button pad.  It's like grabbing one of the original Xbox controllers after living with the controller-s for awhile.

The Playstation pads have always SUCKED ASS!

I prefer the original 3 button Genesis controller mostly because I prefer to use the original controller for any system when possible. I also think it looks way cooler and it fits in your hand nicer, but the problem with the controllers is that the buttons can get really sticky and stiff which becomes really annoying. I don't actually mind the 6 button controller as much as I like to make fun of it, but unfortunately I have to use it more since the 3 buttons become crap over time.

I think SNES pads are pretty crap.

I agree. All my SNES pads are pretty shitty anymore. The D-pad is so f*cking stiff one of them you have to press the right side like halfway to the bottom of the controller to get it to register.

Perhaps I ought to consider taking it apart and cleaning it.

Word life.  The Sega Arcade stick kicked ass too.

Yeah, I can't really think of any stick for an 8 or 16-bit console which was better than the Sega Arcade Sticks (yes, that includes the Neo Geo).  The 3 button version was especially weighty which was really nice.  Love that hand rest on the side, too.

SFC-pads are the best ever made in humans history, as long they work fine!

PCE Games coundown: 690/737 (47 to go or 93.6% clear)
PCE Shmups countdown: 111/111 (all clear!!)
Sega does what Nintendon't, but only NEC does better than both together!^^

i second that vote.

i also second the sentiment that the genesis/mega drive 6-pressers are dope.  i love those controllers - almost as much as the glorious saturn pads.
the traditional 3-button pads did double nicely as bludgeoning weapons, however.  and i once held one up in front of a huge spotlight to summon the caped crusader.  not sure if i'd be alive to type this today if it weren't for that game pad (tears up).

3 button Genesis pads are fine for a while, but after not that much use the d-pad starts screwing up. I remember getting pissed in Phantasy Star III when I pushed up and the dude walked left sometimes unless I pushed very precisely up. If I'm having controller issues in a 1 mph RPG then certainly the pad is crap. I can see that at the time they were just trying to make something that was comfortable and filled the hand more that the teeny-weeny FC, or SMS pads. Its just happens to not be a very well made controller.

The SNES pad pretty much rules for anything but 6-button fighters, which at this point I'm no longer playing on SNES anyway. The SNES pad is also really really f*cking reliable. I use a Super Smart Joy to hook a SNES pad to my Mac for all my emulation usage.

I like the SNES pads because they're just like the original NES/TG pads but with nice circular edges for comfort. They should have made an official 6 button version of the snes pad like the PCE's 6 button - for fighting games and such.

The Genesis batwing pad is ok, but I wish they made a smaller version of it. The would help reduce that hollow feel and plus smaller gamepads are cooler (PS2 NES retro pad kickass). I mostly use the Sega 6 button game pad for my Genesis adventures
