TG-16/TE/TurboDuo Discussion / Re: Game of the Month: July 2025 - Shapeshifter
« Last post by Mathius on July 02, 2025, 06:02:50 PM »
I have tried and tried and tried to get into SS since acquiring the game 16 years ago. The SotB-esque multi-plane scrolling is breathtaking, but like with many Amiga titles the gameplay just kinda suffers here and there. The Brothers Duomazov had a great review on their site along with a superb interview with the a dev team member that I would always read before going back in for another go. I miss that site so much!

Geise, did your wife find re-employment?

Shapeshifter

Sorry for missing last month. Had some major personal family stuff going on as well as my wife losing her job, but things are back on track. So, time for me to finally sit down with some gaming. This month is Shapeshifter. Icom has made some stinkers, but this is a game that I actually like. It kinda reminds me of Wrath of the Deamon on Amiga and ST which is a Shadow of the Beast clone, but this has more action/platforming mixed in. It even has some light role playing mixed in. Much of the game consists of traversing hostile areas, fighting regular enemies on the way and defeating bosses. The town area where Lykos can replenish his health and buy any of the three available weapons (axe, mace, or bow). These weapons can be upgraded by enchanting them or picking up power-ups. After Lykos rescues a wizard he gains access to a transformation power. Transformations require special gems and cannot be performed if Lykos runs out of them. There are four transformations in the game: the panther can jump over large gaps; the shark can swim; the golem can jump higher; and the golden dragon can fly. Each of these forms can also collect power-ups that unlocks a few other attack abilities. The game's stages are interconnected, but usually a new form must be acquired before Lykos can access a new area. Lykos has eight lives consisting of smaller health units (hearts). The game can only be saved in the town. I have never given the game enough time back in the day and never put this on my clear list. Hopefully I have the time to get through this one. Hope you all enjoy!

PC Engine/SuperGrafx Discussion / Re: PC Engine Double Input Issue

I've encountered faulty HU6280 chips that only have issues with a controller working properly. Although in each example, if would be some of the directions or buttons just not working at all, as opposed to buttons doing the wrong thing entirely.

I have a Super CD-ROM? which appears to simply not do anything at all. No disc activity, no video from it, nothing.

Before fearing the worst, I'm wanting to troubleshoot whether it's actually getting the signal to turn itself on at all.

It has been recapped, although I wasn't the one to start the process. It does appear as though someone tried it themselves, found it didn't work, then sold it on (and I knew it wasn't working when I bought it. But it was cheap.)
It wasn't too bad, but I've since redone it to my own standards. There were some traces I noticed as broken and repaired, but still no success, and I can't see any more obvious issues from a visual inspection.

The voltage regulators also receive voltage, and I am of course powering both the main console and the Super CD-ROM? unit together with a suitable power adapter (and splitter and other necessary adapters).

I've also tested it with both my white PC Engine and my Supergrafx; the latter being easy to get a direct video signal from, and pressing "run" just instantly returns "Please set disc!", suggesting it's receiving absolutely no response (I presume).

Does anyone have any information about how the Super CD-ROM? "turns on", and what traces I should check for continuity, and things like that? I don't have an oscilloscope yet, but I'll see about getting one if I can rule out it being an issue in connection or a simple component.

I know this is an old topic, but I recently did this myself and took pictures, so I figure that even if it's too late to help the original poster, it could at least help some others.

Removing the supercapacitor in the IFU-30A frees up its ground via to solder the additional address lines to to ground them.

An original IFU-30 is the same procedure as the IFU-30A, just in a different place with different grounding points available.

  • Blazing Lazers box does not have the game. I swear I had the game, but I cannot find it. Hoping I didn't lose it in my recent move, but I'm still looking for it. So that one is just sort of on hold for now.
  • I have Cosmic Fantasy 1, 3, and maybe 4? If you're interested in those please let me know! Forgot to photograph/price those.
  • All of these are also listed on a the FB Turbo Town group, but would much rather sell to some familiar names here first! So dibs are here first.
  • I also may or may not have a good working US Turbo Duo recapped with matching controller I'm thinking about selling too. Just not sure if I want to get rid of it, but I'll consider it. Would prefer to sell that here if I do. Make an offer? Offer something cool?

Can you finish this faster than the Mega Drive project (a decade+)?
Lol ,i don't know, just doing the bonus level is slow because matching all the arcade ninja positions is not so simple, at least for the first bonus .
Md version is not arcade perfect at all(the bonus level for exemple,is far from perfect too), and have some bugs too, however i hope to be faster .

This is probably beyond the scope of what you're aiming to do with this project, but I wonder if there would be any possibility of making an enhanced mode that perhaps uses assets from other games in the series?
It's a bit complicated because the gfx have not the same resolution, size or style differs too much .

But it might be neat if there was a second mode with more unique tiles and sprites to make it look nicer?
You need a graphic designer for that, except for recoloring as i did here, it's out of reach for me.

First and foremost of course the original arcade game. But it might be neat if there was a second mode with more unique tiles and sprites to make it look nicer?
